Britain, and England in particular, became one of the most prosperous economic regions in Europe between .

What do I mean by poverty creation ? My collaborators and I wrote a longer article about it for Fast Company (read it here). This tells us that wealth is a kind of information inherent in social systems. These images show the information complexity of two countries as they change in time - measured by looking at the diversity of products each country was able to produce.

In Book 7 of the Politics, Aristotle argues that work is such an instrumental good. If the productive activity enjoyed in leisure can be good in itself-say, writing poetry or building a birdhouse or reading a book-it would seem that similar exercises of human creativity and rationality occur in the workplace. But the distinction between intrinsic and instrumental goods is useful. What is missing, though, from Aristotle is other people. For Luther, vocation was far more than economic activity, including also our callings in our families, the church, and the culture as a whole. Each of these vocations calls us to particular neighbors whom we are to love and serve.
