More Prayers as Blessings Prayers (49). The custom of giving blessings goes back to the very earliest times. In the morning of Creation, on the completion of each day's work, God blessed the living creatures that came from His hands, bidding them increase and multiply and fill the earth (Gen. i-ii). When Noah emerged from the Ark, he received God's benediction (Genesis 9:1), and this heritage he transmitted through his sons, Sem and Japheth, to posterity. Blessing of All Domestic Animals - Lord God King of heaven and earth, Thou the Word.

Grieving can make those around us uncomfortable. Friends sometimes don’t know what to do with our pain. Yet grief, as painful a season as it is, is a necessary part of our healing. Loved ones struggle to find adequate words to comfort our aching wounds. To run from grief is to run from the very thing that can quell the pain of our loss. English poet and hymnodist, William Cowper, described grief itself as medicine. Grief cleanses the anguish from our souls and sets us back up on the path of life so we can dance. Grieving is the process God uses to bring us to a place of wholeness

The grief you know through the loss of a loved one may be the most disruptive experience in your life. There are also those who are, in a very real sense, living with dying-those who due to age, disease, or injury, are dealing with the news of their own impending death. No one is immune to loss and grief and the agonizing moments of doubt, fear, questioning, and anger that can accompany it.There is support for you in your trouble. There is presence of family, friends, and church. There are memories of the past and hope for those who live on. There is, above all, the Lord and Giver of Life, who holds you in His arms with comfort, pulls you up when you need support, and helps you endure as you live with your grief.Through devotions, prayers, Scripture, and hymns this little book brings comfort, peace, encouragement, and hope to those who have lost a loved one or those preparing for their own death. This Christ-centered devotional is designed as a convenient take-along resource to help the reader find the comfort provided by the Christian understanding of death. Because of Jesus' death and resurrection we realize that even while dying and death can cause pain and grief, death has no ultimate power over us.

I ordered this resource in July 2013 after my wife's death 5 weeks earlier. Being very familiar with CPH resources on Pastoral Care I expected much, and this little book did not disappoint. It is beyond the personalized stories of individuals, yet not so general that it loses impact or feels like a book of platitudes. A mix of God's Word and meditations based on it will be helpful to a wide audience.

When I ordered it, I did not realize that the editor Rev. Scot Kinnaman also co-edited another CPH resourse, "Visitation". I have used this resource myself in making various types of visits with individuals in various situations. Another valueable resource, and I hope it becomes available in Kindle edition!
