This book by Lawana Blackwell, as well as the whole series of The Gresham Chronicles, is most enjoyable. The author interweaves multiple story lines which creates a high interest in the reader.

This book by Lawana Blackwell, as well as the whole series of The Gresham Chronicles, is most enjoyable. In this particular book, I enjoyed the story line about Mercy Sanders and her difficult position in a household of obnoxious brothers and a selfish, unreasonable father. She brings out good Scriptural counsel through the various situations encountered by the characters. There is also humor interwoven throughout. I had two difficulties with the series

Andrew's daughter Elizabeth is being courted by a handsome young curate

Andrew's daughter Elizabeth is being courted by a handsome young curate. But while she is considering his offer of marriage, the man she once loved suddenly appears at her door, wanting to prove he has changed and is now worthy of her affection. A cloud of uncertainty surrounds her as she seeks to know her own heart. Lovely, kindhearted Mercy Sanders isn't allowed to be courted in a normal fashion. You will be as stunned as she at the advice she is given on how to win the heart of Gresham's newest resident.

Lawana Blackwell has my utter respect. Despite the rather large cast of characters in The Courtship of the Vicar's Daughter, each and every one had such a unique personality.

The Courtship of the Vicar's Daughter (Gresham Chronicles, Book 2). ISBN. 1556619480 (ISBN13: 9781556619489). Lawana Blackwell has my utter respect. All the characters - even minor ones - were well-rounded, believable individuals. The book itself almost seemed to have several different ongoing plots, though all, for the most part, involving a romance in the small village of Gresham. I'm really not even sure there was a single main character, but rather many.

I've read the first three, and I eagerly await an addition to the series. In "The Courtship of the Vicar's Daughter," young Elizabeth Phelps deals with handling her emotions and learns about what makes a solid foundation for a marriage. I highly recommend this book to readers young and old, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Great story line-keeps you going to the very last page! Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 20 years ago. I couldn't put down the book. It really keeps you wondering what will happen next

In the second book in the Gresham Chronicles, Blackwell has created another sweet, restful historical romance (or two!) in the peaceful village of Gresham. Readers will delight in the continuation of the story that started with The Widow of Larkspur Inn, though it's not strictly necessary to read that volume first. Even readers who do not usually enjoy inspirational romance may enjoy this story, with its touches of humor and pathos. ुस्तक 2. Lawana Blackwell२००७ नोभेम्बर १. Baker Books. I have read one Lawana Blackwell novel previously and was very happy to
discover another excellent novelist. However, after reading The Widow of
Larkspur's Inn, I was hooked and I immediately purchased and began to read
"The Courtship of the Vicar's Daughter." All I can say is that The Gresham
Chronicles Series is an excellent one and not to be missed! I just love this
beautiful town and feel like I know all its inhabitants( the good and not so
nice ones)! This book is a lovely Christian-based book, not unlike the others
in the series. However, it is filled with human, imperfect people like the rest.
It is very encouraging and full of fun and humor a plenty! Please try this book
you will be glad you did.

This book continues the storyline from the end of The Widow of Larkspur Inn. Julia and Andrew are planning their wedding. Julia's son Philip is preparing to go to secondary school as is Andrew's daughter, Laurel. Andrew's older daughter, Elizabeth, has been seeing the curate from a neighboring town. She realizes he plans to ask her to marry him and believes she will accept as she understands the role of the wife of a clergyman. However, she continues to have feelings for Jonathan, her old beau who proved himself untrustworthy. As time goes on, she becomes uncomfortable with his expectations regarding her behavior and comes to question whether to continue their relationship. Meanwhile, Jonathan has come to a belief in Christ and comes to their town and ends up as the new schoolmaster. Andrew is infuriated by this and becomes very protective of Elizabeth.

A parallel storyline follows Seth Langford who is serving twenty years in London's Newgate Prison. Ten years into his sentence, Seth is summoned to the warden to discover the charges against him have been proven false and he is being released. The person who framed him was the child of his employer and the boy, now a young man, had finally confessed. Seth was being offered five hundred pounds as compensation and in return he has to agree to not charge the young man with false accusation resulting in imprisonment. Seth accepts the money and tells the young man he forgives him. After release, Seth looks for his former fiancee and discovers she had married and had a child but she and her husband had been killed in a fire and the boy was in an orphanage. Seth ends up adopting Thomas and they relocate to the village of Gresham where Seth purchases a cottage and starts a horse farm.

Meanwhile, one of the lodgers at the inn, Mrs. Kingston, is being pursued by Squire Bartley. She is elusive and doesn't encourage him as she believes that will actually encourage his pursuit of her. This courtship brings much entertainment into the book. Mrs. Kingston also encourages Mercy Sanders as she slaves away in cooking, cleaning, gardening and canning for her overbearing father and six brothers. Mercy's mother has died and any suitor who shows up is scared away by her father and brothers. Her only friend, an elderly woman who led her to Christ and taught her to read, has also died. Mercy is very alone and has no way out of her predicament. Mrs. Kingston has a way of dealing with Mercy's father and assists in the plan to achieve a marriage between Mercy and Seth.

All the storylines are enjoyable and have satisfying endings, but I loved the story of Seth and Mercy. And the emphasis of the leading of God in the lives of all the characters is inspiring.

This book by Lawana Blackwell, as well as the whole series of The Gresham Chronicles, is most enjoyable. The author interweaves multiple story lines which creates a high interest in the reader. In this particular book, I enjoyed the story line about Mercy Sanders and her difficult position in a household of obnoxious brothers and a selfish, unreasonable father. I read very little Christian fiction anymore because many feel the need to lapse into suggestive descriptions and situations (at which point I get frustrated and close the book). As a reader with Biblical standards, I am not interested in such books. Mrs. Blackwell's books present a life view that is realistic in terms of the sinful behavior one encounters in the world without going into explicit detail in order to "excite" the reader. I appreciate that approach. Also, I find her Biblical values, as presented by the characters, to be right on target. She brings out good Scriptural counsel through the various situations encountered by the characters. There is also humor interwoven throughout. I had two difficulties with the series. One is that, based on the dialogue, I really couldn't think of these characters as English (there was barely an "indeed" in the four novels!) but as "Americanized" English people. (Although her development of the village and its inhabitants was very well done.) Second, as is typical in most Christian books and productions, there is almost ALWAYS a happy ending and things nearly always work out the way people hope they will.(One exception in Blackwell's books was Mr. Clay's bouts with depression; they didn't end when he became a believer.)Even as a believer in Christ, I know that life doesn't always work out the way we want and expect because people often follow their own sinful inclinations rather than God's will. But God gives grace and strength to go on with peace and joy even when life doesn't go as planned. I'd like to see more of this in Christian books and productions. In conclusion,I liked these books very much and found reading them a more profitable use of my time than watching TV.

This is the second book by Lawanna Blackwell that I have read Nd I love it! A Christian love story set in th English of Gresham. The Vicar's daughter's old suitor has changed his ways since Cambridge but the vicar is not so sure and so the young man has to prove to him that he has changed his life around before he'll let him court her. Meanwhile in the community others are helping their neighbours find happiness. A lovely story and the second book in The Gresham Chronicle.
