You won't see these authors accepting any Pulitzer Prizes in the near future. They all write in that ham-fisted style of modern romances where the happy ending is easily guessed right from the first paragraph. For the most part, the authors are pretty good at placing Mackinac themes right into the stories, but all of the stories could exist somewhere else. Mackinac is more than French vs. British vs. Native American savages, illiterate trappers, idle rich Victorian vacationers, and bicycles & fudge. Maybe the authors could have tried harder and written something in which the Island is part of the story, not just some place for the story to take place. Read this book if you are obsessed with Mackinac Island (as I am) and have to read everything about it. Don't read this if you're looking for great descriptions, subtle action, and moving prose. And, don't read this if you don't want to be hit over the head with Christian ideology.

Been to Mackinac Island several times. One of our favorite places to vacation. Anything about the island interests me, so when I ran across this book, I knew it had to become part of my collection. Great stories!

A friend loaned me this book, and I loved it so much that I am buying my own copy! The four stories in the book are set in four different time periods, beginning in the 1700s. The final story draws from the previous stories, and the ending is quite amazing. I enjoyed reading this book without having to worry about bad language, graphic violence, and sexual content. The books were not "preachy" yet demonstrated the characters' faith. I will read this book again and again.

If you are looking to spend a quiet evening reading, rather than watching some meaningless movie on the Lifetime Channel, then this book is for you. You can read it, then pitch it with no regrets. Four short stories, with some linkage between plots, are based on Mackinac Island settings. The four authors obviously were given some guidance in linking the plots. These are authors who pump out one "masterpiece" after another. I believe one author lists 30 novels or novellas in eight years. This should give you some clue about the long-term value of the writing.
