h the book of Revelation is presented as a heavenly letter, its imagery did not simply fall out of the sky. Few interpreters today hold the opinion that the entire book was dictated word for word to the seer or that he simply wrote down mechanically what he heard and saw. Even if the book is based on actual ecstatic experience, it is clear that the seer made use of traditional images and forms to communicate that experience. The Pattern of the Combat Myth and Revelation 12 Fontenrose demonstrates the similarity among the various combat myths by showing that many of the same themes occur in each of them.

The cosmic war between the children of light and the children of darkness still infuses American thought, including politics -- thus, in the campaign of 2008, Obama was said to be The Anti-Christ. Extremely perceptive, and also extremely well read in others' approaches to her subject, (even though published in 1976)!
I rate Yarbro Collins, in both respects, up there with Hans Dieter (not Otto) Betz, though he has a wider range of interests.
(Adela Yarbro-Collins and Hans Dieter Betz have never, as far as I know, directly addressed the same topic.)

I found this helpful to interpret Revelation and to see this combat motif where previously I didn't know quite what to make of it.
