Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives is a book written by Pope Benedict XVI, first published on November 21, 2012, by Image Books. Pope Benedict presents the stories of Jesus' infancy and childhood as being as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago. This third volume in the series was preceded by Jesus of Nazareth (2007) and Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week (2011).

The Infancy Narratives. The Death and Resurrection of Jesus. The prologues to the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, the infancy narratives, make clear that Jesus was of God and from God from the moment of his conception. Although we refer to these prologues as infancy narratives, they do not actually give us information about Jesus’ infancy and childhood. Rather, they answer the question, Who is Jesus of Nazareth? that he is a man of God, God’s Son.

To demonstrate the transition of one epoch (period of history) the Epoch of Israel represented by John the Baptist to a new epoch the Christian Epoch represented by Jesus. Luke wishes the reader to recognise that Jesus and John are twin agents of Gods salvation. John is great in the sight of the Lord (1:15), Jesus will be called the Lord (2:11); John will be filled with the Holy Spirit (1:15), Jesus is born in the Holy Spirit (1:35) John is a Prophet of the Most High (1:76), Jesus is the Son of the Most.

Nonbiblical scholarship sees in these narratives only an adaptation of traditional folklore themes relating to the birth of the hero. This leaves the ordinary Christian in a vacuum that the mass media and other commercial interests are only too anxious to fill.

The infancy narratives of John the Baptist and Jesus following the prologue are also unique to Luke’s Gospel (1:5–2:52). This section of Luke sets the story of Jesus within the context of the Old Testament story. The impression generated by these chapters is that one has been immersed in the continuing experience of God’s people. Yet, Luke 1–2 also announces that the closing chapter in the history of God’s people has begun.
