Isbister gives a superb overview of third world development In the book Promises Not Kept, the author, John Isbister states: Imperialism shaped today’s third world

Isbister gives a superb overview of third world development. Isbister asks us the question of why social change in the third world has come to a halt and how come there is massive and swelling poverty that continues to plague almost all of the developing countries. In the book Promises Not Kept, the author, John Isbister states: Imperialism shaped today’s third world. This statement explains how the third world itself is nothing more than the aftermath of imperialism.

Well written book on the economic/social consequences that first world countries have on third world countries. A highly nuanced book offering a map to the dysfunction and demise of the third world countries and the major role that the west had.

but it's just that. So if you're in the market for anything else, look.. well elsewhere. This book just gives a sometimes one-sided view on current politics surrounding captalism, poverty, etc. Interesting only for research purposes.

(This is a review based upon the third edition). This book was a watershed in my understanding of the history of global poverty and the developing world. There are specific reasons why the majority of the world is still poor (and it wasn't what I learned growing up). A great primer for all who are considering working, volunteering, or even touring in the "third world." While not comprehensive, a great introduction to the history, the global economy and the legacy of colonialism and global independence movements. Provides a solid framework to begin understanding the world beyond the evening news.
