Bryan M. Liftin’s novel, The Sword, is a story about struggle, persecution, and truth in a post-apocalyptic world. The two heroes, Captain Teofil and the farm girl Anastasia, are forced to fight rough outsiders, religious persecution, and their own internal struggles with doubt. The Sword is presented in three distinct sections, each telling a different aspect of the story. Part one starts when Captain Teofil meets Anastasia in the woods after a dangerous encounter with a bear. This is the beginning of a growing strong friendship. The book ends with a feeling of hope, though not the one the reader expected. Liftin does a very good job of creating a unique setting for his story.

Written during a time when authors were extraordinary scholars, the book has taken a well deserved place in history as one of the most exhaustive treatments of the sword. History buffs and military historians too will relish the thorough treatment of swords and other weapons, from ancient times to the early Roman empire. At times long-winded, convoluted, and blatantly racist and prejudiced against many cultures, there is still some interesting information (if you like edgy weapons) within its pages.

In ancient times it was a privilege to bear this sword before the king. It was considered a merciful gesture. The story surrounding the breaking of the weapon is unknown, but mythological history indicates that the tip was broken off by an angel to prevent a wrongful killing. The Sword of Mercy is part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom and is one of only five swords used during the coronation of the British monarch.
