Claude Monet was a famous French painter whose work gave a name to the art movement Impressionism, which was concerned with capturing light and natural forms. Claude Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France. During his time in Argenteuil, Monet visited with many of his artist friends, including Renoir, Pissarro and Edouard Manet-who, according to Monet in a later interview, at first hated him because people confused their names. Banding together with several other artists, Monet helped form the Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs, as an alternative to the Salon and exhibited their works together.

In his mature works, Monet developed his method of producing repeated studies of the same motif in series, changing canvases with the light or as his interest shifted. These series were frequently exhibited in groups-for example, his images of haystacks (1890/91) and the Rouen cathedral (1894)

The Early Life of the Artist. Claude Monet was born in Paris, but spent his childhood in Le Havre, a sunny and noisy port city in which the Seine flows into the sea. He had no desire to study and no tolerance for the restrictions imposed upon him by his college and family. His caricatures hung in the windows of the only art shop in the city alongside the landscapes of artist Eugene Boudin, who first convinced Monet to paint in the plein air style (after half a year of persuasion and arguments) and taught him to see and appreciate the world around him.

The Lives of the Artists series retraces the lives of some of the greatest and most influential artists of the Western world. Each book focuses on the life and works of one artist and presents a selection of great works that illustrate the artist's development. Each volume also includes the story of the artist's personal life and highlights the important social and historical events of the time. Full-color photographic reproductions, detailed time lines, an explanatory glossary, and a comprehensive index make each title an indispensable part of any art library.
