Thornton W Burgess was an American treasure. These books (there is a second volume) collect some of the books into a handy volume. Nicely done characters with individual traits, strengths and weaknesses that help children understand human nature through animals. I'm getting a pair for my son and daughter to read to their children.

Thornton Waldo Burgess (January 17, 1874 – June 5, 1965) was an American conservationist and author of children's stories. Burgess loved the beauty of nature and its living creatures so much that he wrote about them for 50 years in books and his newspaper column, Bedtime Stories. He was sometimes known as the Bedtime Story-Man. By the time he retired, he had written more than 170 books and 15,000 stories for the daily newspaper column.

Thornton W. Burgess, author of Old Mother West Wind and many other . Burgess, author of Old Mother West Wind and many other children's classics, was a master at telling a good story that holds a child's attention while instilling an important lesson in the most painless and enjoyable fashion. First published in 1913, The Adventures of Reddy Fox was one of his finest efforts. Eight charming new illustrations, based on the originals by Harrison Cady, enhance this delightful tale, newly reprinted in large, easy-to-read type.

A collection of stories featuring Buster Bear, Old Mr. Toad, Bob White, and other woodland creatures.

Thornton W Burgess was an American treasure. These books (there is a second volume) collect some of the books into a handy volume. I loved these books when I was young, my kids loved them and now my grandsons have loved them too. Mr. Burgess wrote with humor and a careful observant thoughtful eye about the woods and fields around us and the flora and fauna that are to be found there. Lightfoot the Deer, Paddy Beaver, Chatterer the Red Squirrel, Along the Laughing Brook, Long Legs the Heron, Old Mother West Wind...they are great stories for kids (and adults) -- the kind of books that grandparents read to their grandkids and everyone loves them. He wrote over 100 books and fostered a love of the natural world (for me) that is deep and a source of much comfort.

The stories are THE BEST!

It took my boys a little while to get into these stories (they are 2 and 4) but now they live them and ask for them every night. We are about a third of the way through it and I like the moral underpinnings of the stories (work hard, obey your parents etc). Overall a great book for kids that has a lot more depth than the typical kids book written today

Purchased as a gift for my Grand -niece, I was disappointed that none of the pictures were in color. I suppose the stories are, as described, classics but I never heard of some of the characters
