SAFE RETURN is a children's book about knitting that I truly love: the happy ending still brings tears to my eyes. I loved Safe Return by Catherine Dexter. It’s a sweet short read that I picked up in the young adult section of our library book sale

SAFE RETURN is a children's book about knitting that I truly love: the happy ending still brings tears to my eyes. Based on an actual event, it tells the story of a young girl's learning to knit "Waves" mittens while anxiously awaiting the return of her Aunt Dana's too-long-overdue merchant ship. It’s a sweet short read that I picked up in the young adult section of our library book sale. An orphan, a Swedish island setting, a little bit of suspense and a little bit of knitting make this a charming read, even for adults.

I bought this because I’m a knitter and have meet wonderful people from all over the world via the internet and our love of knitting. It’s an interesting story for children (I believe 5th grade level).

A very good story. I knit, so the inclusion of content about knitting made it especially heartwarming for me.

Good story. I have the Piecework issue that includes the pattern for a pair of mittens called Safe return, and part of the story. It's a young person's book, but I enjoyed it.

The ship finally returns to the Baltic Sea island of Gotland on Christmas Eve 1824, after having been given up for lost by most islanders.

The little girl's chosen mitten pattern, "Waves", is a classic Swedish mitten pattern. Charts for the curlicue Fair Isle design can be found in the May 2011 issue of Interweave Press's TRADITIONAL KNITTING magazine (still available from some sellers, e.g., Interweave Knits: Knitting Traditions-Winter 2011.

Now out of print, the new book is a collector's item at today's prices. However, affordable used copies can still be located if you shop around. I certainly hope that a crafts or children's book publisher will bring this wonderful little book back into print soon.

An orphan, a Swedish island setting, a little bit of suspense and a little bit of knitting make this a charming read, even for adults. The happy ending might not appeal as much to today’s young readers, but it was just right for me.

I bought this book for a grand-daughter that was coming to visit. I decided to read it first. It is a wonderful story and is based on a true story. It takes place long ago but you feel like you are there with her. I have been teaching my grand-daughter to knit and thought it would be perfect for her.
