This is a very interesting and well written book about Thanksgiving. It covers many aspects of Thanksgiving; from the Pilgrims' reason for leaving England, celebrating the first Thanksgiving and even including some of the events that took place leading up to it becoming the National Holiday it is today. Each "chapter" is very short (approximately 2 pages) so if you wanted to read this to a younger child you could simply break it up into different reading sessions instead of trying to read through the whole book at once. If I had found this book when I was teaching I would have used it in my prekindergarten classes. If you are wanting to introduce your child to the history of Thanksgiving, I would highly recommend this book. - Mama Carmody

Dana Rau`s THANKSGIVING not only explains about the Pilgrims` first thanksgiving celebrations with the Native Americans, but with color photos and reproductions of paintings, attractively elaborates on its history as a holiday, its symbols, as well as different modern-day celebrations. Fullof facts, this concise, non-fiction picture book includes a vocabulary list, as well as an index and other resources for youthful researchers. While the text and length is appropriate for the suggested age group, the large print and colorful visuals make it fine for reading aloud to younger children. Rau should be commended for her excellent use of paintings, as well as her choice of photos which touch on the multicultural aspects of the USA.

If you are looking for a non-fiction book about Thanksgiving, I highly recommend Thanksgiving (True Books: Holidays) by Dana Meachen Rau. The text is incredibly information, teaching even me some facts that I did not know about the holiday. The pictures help engage younger readers.
