The Just William series is a sequence of thirty-nine books written by English author Richmal Crompton. The books chronicle the adventures of the unruly schoolboy William Brown. Published over a period of almost fifty years, between 1921 and 1970, the series is notable for the fact that the protagonist remains at the same eleven years of age, despite each book being set in the era in which it was written. The first book was Just William, and often the entire series is named after this book.

Richmal Crompton Lamburn (15 November 1890 – 11 January 1969) was a popular English writer, best known for her Just William series of books, humorous short stories, and to a lesser extent adult fiction books. Richmal Crompton Lamburn was born in Bury, Lancashire, the second child of the Rev. Edward John Sewell Lamburn, a Classics master at Bury Grammar School and his wife Clara (née Crompton).

Richmal’s world was also one where children should be seen and not heard, do as they’re told and not get upset if they’re ignored or thought of as a ‘bad lot’. Just ’cause of us playin’ gladiators in ’em the first day we got ’em! Well, the bit of damage it did was easy to put right. It was a jolly good thing really, ’cause it sort of showed where it was weak.
