I like this book about the history of the pyramid's. The focus here is largely the Egyptian and Sudanese pyramids, although one photo of a Mayan pyramid allows some comparison between Egypt and the Americas. These structures were normally used for tombs of the elite (. the Pharaohs in Egypt) or as temples (in Central America).

Springs were found exactly in the place where pyramids were located, and during subsequent drilling a group of scientists headed by V. Gokh made an unbelievable discovery: they found a highly durable gypsum concrete plate. Further studies made it possible to draw a staggering conclusion: this was a pyramid covered with various rocks up to its top as a result of flood. Unlike other pyramids discovered in Crimea earlier, the newly found pyramids are above the ground and built in the rock.

In addition to sharing information on what is known about the Egyptian pyramids, Putnam also mentions unsolved riddles about them, such as how many workers built them, how the stones were moved, etc. Occasionally, the author makes conjectures about why things were done or how people felt. The information here is similar to that found in the titles mentioned above, but the photo-essay format is a novelty.

Egyptian pyramid construction techniques are the controversial subject of many hypotheses. These techniques seem to have developed over time; later pyramids were not constructed in the same way as earlier ones. Most of the construction hypotheses are based on the belief that huge stones were carved from quarries with copper chisels, and these blocks were then dragged and lifted into position. Disagreements chiefly concern the methods used to move and place the stones.

I bought this book used on a whim, but am happy I did. In about an hour and a half, we (well, I should say mostly I) were able to create the pyramid and temple structure almost exactly as it is shown in the picture. The caveat: My daughter is six, and I thought that we could do the project together. Unfortunately, the folds and insertions require some finesse: About 10 minutes into the project, my daughter decided that she would rather do some coloring. So, I rate this as a good project for 10-12 year olds with parental help, or for teenagers by themselves.
