Popularly known as Fireside Al and Front Porch Al, he delighted listeners across the country with his inimitable storytelling. He was co-host of As It Happens, from 1974 until 1993, sharing the studio with Barbara Frum, Elizabeth Gray, Dennis Trudeau, and Michael Enright. To be honest, I had never even heard of him before picking up "Fireside Al's Treasury of Christmas Stories," But I was lured by the promise of a collection of Christmas stories, some famous, some less so, combined with a CD of a skilled radio performer giving them voice. Nostalgia, as it turns out, is unnecessary to enjoy this collection.

Indianapolis, New York, The Bobbs-Merrill company. Christmas is Christ: Birth of Jesus Christ, Saint Matthew - And it came to pass, Saint Luke - Even unto Bethlehem, Henry van Dyke - Other wise man, Henry van Dyke - Man at the gate of the world, . Cule - Husband of Mary, Elizabeth Hart - Strange story of a traveler to Bethlehem, John.

For five decades, Alan Maitland was celebrated for his resonant mellow CBC radio voice - and perhaps, most famously, for the stories he read over the airwaves in his alter ego of Fireside Al. For 19 years, Fireside Al read his favourite stories to a devoted radio audience and even though Alan Maitland died in 1999, his voice has been captured for posterity in a highly valued set of sound recordings of these magnificent performances.

Now ten of Maitland's favourite Christmas stories are being given new life in this Christmas gift book for the whole family. Fireside Al's Treasury of Christmas Stories includes:

The familiar words of O. Henry's celebrated short story, "The Gift of the Magi" Along with Francis P. Church's famous Christmas editorial: "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus" "The Santa Claus Trap" by Margaret Atwood Stephen Leacock's gentle seasonal wit in "The Errors of Santa Claus" Robert Louis Stevenson's poem "Christmas at Sea" and Robert Service's "The Trapper's Christmas Eve"

Each with a very different take on the theme of seasonal love and joy. And there are more delectable treats in store from Fireside Al's Christmas cupboard.

The treasury gains special lustre from the magnificently detailed and richly colored paintings of Alan Daniel, Canada's best-loved illustrator of children's books. Above all the package is completed by a bound-in CD of Alan Maitland's reading of the ten stories included in the book.

Some stories are not suitable for young children, ages 5 and 8.

I have no nostalgia for "Fireside Al." To be honest, I had never even heard of him before picking up "Fireside Al's Treasury of Christmas Stories," But I was lured by the promise of a collection of Christmas stories, some famous, some less so, combined with a CD of a skilled radio performer giving them voice.

Nostalgia, as it turns out, is unnecessary to enjoy this collection. This book and CD is a beautiful collection that delights almost every sense. Along with the text, there are full-color illustrations by Alan Daniel. The paintings are in muted tones, preserving the texture of the canvas, and range from fairly typical images of Santa Claus and snowy landscapes to mad Mr. Gate's anti-Christmas machine. You can enjoy the alone, or listen along to Fireside Al reading the stories. He has a deep radio voice, and brings the stories to life. There are no sound effects or ambient noises; just Al reading the stories from the book as written. Some are read fairly straight-forward, such as "Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus," while with some he plays around with voices and creates more of a story, as with "The Errors of Santa Claus."

The stories included are:

Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus - The famous 1898 letter and response to Francis P. Church is embellished with a story of a tough old city editor finding himself holding the hopes of an eight year old girl, and being touched by it.

The Errors of Santa Claus - Stephen Leacock - A 1919 story of children, parents, a mix-up of presents and how everything turned out alright in the end.

Christmas at Sea - Robert Louis Stevenson - A properly adventurous poem from the master of ocean adventure, full of pounding winds and rolling gales.

To Make a Christmas Cake That Will Keep Until Easter - Anonymous - A 1709 recipe that works as a story and would probably work as a recipe as well, if only you could lay your hands on a Quart of Ale Yeast.

Hoodoo McFiggin's Christmas - Stephen Leacock - Another 1919 funny Leacock story about every child's nightmare. His Christmas present from Santa is entirely clothes.

The Santa Claus Trap - Margaret Atwood - A 1990 poem in the tradition of the Grinch about Mr. Gate's the man who hates Christmas and his plan to trap Santa Claus.

The Gift of the Magi - O. Henry - This 1906 story is almost as much a Christmas classic as Dickens' "A Christmas Carol." And like a true classic, it has lost none of its power over the years.

The Trapper's Christmas Eve - Robert Service - A rough and lonely 1912 poem from the "Bard of the Yukon." This is the one for outdoorsmen everywhere who know that winter snow means a bitter struggle.

The First Christmas Tree - Eugene Field - The only overtly Biblical piece in the collection, and 1890 story from the writer of the classic children's poem ""Wynken, Blynken, and Nod" and "Daniel and the Devil." The connection drawn between the cross of the crucifixion and the Christmas tree is a bit of a stretch, but a poetic one.
