When the Wind Stops book. Beloved author Charlotte Zolotow's lyrical prose and Stefano Vitale's rich illustrations make this classic picture book a beautiful celebration of the cycle of life. Where does the wind go when it stops? When a little boy asks this question at the end of a happy day, his mother explains that the wind does not stop-it blows away to make the trees dance somewhere else.

Zolotow makes no substantial changes; she removes a few phrases to tighten the text. Vitale contributes a set of lyrical, simply drawn scenes in subtly blended colors. These are so thinly applied that they are translucent; the grain of the plywood on which they are painted becomes part of the design. A fine, seamless new match of text and art. (Picture book. A shortened, reillustrated version of a classic picture book (originally illustrated by Howard Knotts, 1975): A child asks "Why does the day have to end?" His mother replies, "So night can begin. A chain of questions and answers follows, taking readers across the world and through the seasons.

This is an all-time favorite. I keep one or two copies on hand to give to a family that has experienced a loss, like the death of a grandparent. It doesn't necessarily work for people of all religious faiths, but it's a calming, beautifully illustrated book that discusses change in an accepting and gentle way.
