I have looked carefully through the early math/numeracy books at our library, and this is my favorite by far. It fills an important gap between the counting books and the higher-level elementary-school math books. It is engaging, thoughtful, and teaches early math concepts in a way that holds the child's attention. My son regularly pulls it out during reading time, which wasn't the case for the other math books I found. I wish it were still in print.

Age range: Preschool to early elementary

Pros: The book uses fun illustrations and a puzzle-style approach to teach numeracy and basic math concepts. For example, the counting section starts with counting up by ones with illustrations of objects. It then has a page with children forming a pictoral "number line", with different numbers on their shirts (their ages, soccer jersey numbers, etc.). One of the numbers is missing in each number line, which the reader has to identify. For introducing addition, there is a page teaching the concept of "one more". It has a picture of a classroom with puzzles, crayon boxes, muffin tins, etc., many of which are missing "one" item. The page asks the child to figure out "who needs one more puzzle piece" or "who needs to add one more spoonful of cake mixture". Basically, it's a collection of fun games and puzzles at varying levels.

The child can return to this book over and over again, mastering simpler concepts and working on the "games" for more complex ones.

Highlights:
Early numeracy--counting, sorting, matching, more vs. less, counting by two's, three's, ten's
Early math--adding, subtraction, basic multiplication and division

Our daughter likes this. "Mom" likes it a lot. It helps her to count and grasp the quantity of what the numbers stand for. A nice book that is not "dry" but helps keep a child's interest while they learn.
