Earth is gasping under the weight of centuries of abuse and neglect. Mars may be life's last hope, holding the key to humanity's redemption- both physically and spiritually. In this first book of a series entitled "The Planets", we follow an epic tale of hope and failure on the red planet and beyond.

I wish I could give fewer stars. Mr. Harvey has done the one I hate and that is to make his characters stupid in order to make the plot work. Hey we are on a hostile alien planet, let's all separate, that always works. Oh I know, something horrible happened to our pilot and she isn't right, let's leave her alone in our only way off this rock while we separate. Wait, wait, wait, that same pilot locked us out and we figured out she was going to kill us all so we have to break into the shuttle and, umm, uhh, do nothing and walk into a trap while considering what to do. I kind of wish I had bought a hard copy, that way I could enjoy burning it. As is I have to settle for deleting it.

This was a very though provoking and science fiction fun book. In the very best way it reminded me of the Frank Herbert "Dune" series. The descriptions of the landscapes were very real to me. I read this in about 6 hours total - even staying up way too late last night to finish it. And then I was mad that there wasn't anymore to read to find out about more of the character's stories.
Well done Jim. Can't wait to read the next one.

I think I am a pretty smart guy, but I caught myself looking up more than a few things as I delved into Dr. Garvey's book. This is a book you can learn from as well as enjoy for the storyline. Hey, now I know what terraforming is! The character development as we propel forward in time gets better and better. I was really rooting for Fromer and friends. Loved the way the book ends, back to earth. I am anticipating part two. Nice work Jim!
