The tryout judges gave no specific instructions. The only thing they told Jason to do was put on the costume for the yellow-horned ram mascot, Rameses, at the University of North Carolina and prove he deserved to wear the suit. Tom Falsey does a terrific job of recounting the many stories of those who have donated organs as living donors and the compassion and courage of those families, wrenched by the shock of the sudden and premature death of a loved one, who made the courageous decision to donate so that others could live.

The stories are straightforward, written without sentimental overtones, and made all the more powerful by the factual recounting of the motivations that led to the transplant decision, the joy felt by the living donors and the comfort found by the families of legacy donors.

Giving Life is a must read for anyone whose life has been touched by transplantation or anyone who is curious about this subject. Falsey gives the human face to a cold medical equation and brings out the best of people in the worst of circumstances.
