Their backlist of titles includes Enola Gay, San Francisco Earthquake, Voyage of the Damned, The Day the Bubble Burst, The Strange Fate of the Morro Castle and others. I have read and enjoyed them all and am now collecting them all in ebook form but for some reason this one has not made it back into print.

Morgan-Witts wrote 10 non-fiction books with Thomas, four of which were made into feature films, including Enola Gay: The Men, the Mission, the Atomic Bomb, which was first a four-hour NBC special and then re-cut as a feature. Another was Voyage of the Damned, a highly rated feature film which is frequently repeated on TV worldwide.

I read this book three or four times when it was first published. It truly reads like great piece of detective fiction. A big convention in a historic city. Men succumbing to a mysterious illness. Doctors unable to figure out what is making them ill and unable to make any real progress in treating them. People are dying. Time to call in the CDC, America's top medical investigators. I really found this book fascinating. It details the step by step investigation of this illness and a lot of the methodology the CDC uses to run diseases to ground when the diseases are doing their best to hide and not be detected. Thanks to the dedication and "never give up" attitude of these scientists, their perpetrator was finally caught!! This book was about a disease and a scientific organization but it was never dry or dull and was always easy to understand and full of excitement. This more recent book explores the investigation of the cause of Legionnaires' disease by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta immediately following the Legionnaires' disease outbreak at the Bellevue Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia in 1976.
It gives a blow by blow decription of the people involved and, more importantly, the political factors that led to the CDC looking for a virus or bacterium as the cause, rather than any other likely factor such as food contamination or any other toxic substance.
The main conclusion I drew from the book, not necessarily shared by the author, came from the last few pages where the scientists finally found some signs of a microorganism which they named legionella. It was not found in large enough amounts to cause disease, nor was it found in the relevant tissues of all the victims who died (such as the saliva or mucus). This shows that it could not have been the main factor in the deaths of the Legionnaires. Since that time legionella has wrongly been singled out as the only cause of the disease. It thus adds to the long string of false assumptions made by the medical profession that lead to the situation where only 15% of medical interventions are based on solid evidence. The HIV as the cause of AIDS is a similarly wrongly accused innocent victim as described in Peter Duesberg's excellent book "Inventing the AIDS Virus"
