The author, Michael Jackson, aka The Beer Hunter, hosted a tv show by that name but Discovery hasn't released it for sale on anything but VHS and that is now out of print. One of the great things about these books is that they are extremely well made and on a par with a school text book. The cover is thick and tough, the pages are heavy and securely attached to the spine. I've seen copies of these books tied up at whisky shops for shelf references.

It appears that there are at least two versions of these books; a UK version called "Malt Whisky Companion" and a US version called "Complete Guide to Single Malt Scotch." Both have the same contents (pages appear to match) but the original price is in pounds or dollars and the cover art differs. The UK version has a plainer cover while the US version has a pastoral image of a distillery. I have two copies of the third edition due to improper labeling by the re-seller so be careful. I wouldn't recommend any of these at "collectible" prices because the information doesn't change drastically and the sixth edition is in print and reasonably priced.

Thanks to buying the used copies I have been able to pick up copies of the various editions at a song. It is interesting to note that some whiskies come, some go and some get updated images and descriptions. I haven't read the introductory notes on all versions but they appear at least similar on the first four volumes. I can't lay my hands on my fifth and sixth editions but they probably didn't change too much.

The notes on individual distilleries, bottlings and labels are interesting and succinct with lots of good photos of the products.

The author, Michael Jackson, aka The Beer Hunter, hosted a tv show by that name but Discovery hasn't released it for sale on anything but VHS and that is now out of print. Jackson died in 2007, after publishing the sixth edition of this book and several very nice picture books on whisky and beer.

One of the great things about these books is that they are extremely well made and on a par with a school text book. The cover is thick and tough, the pages are heavy and securely attached to the spine. I've seen copies of these books tied up at whisky shops for shelf references. Even though they are heavily used, the books are still in reasonable shape for the amount of wear and tear they sustain.

This is my first buy of one of Michael Jackson’s Whisky Companions.
It gives a short introduction into the world of Scotch single malt whisky, used terminology, and explanation of the grading standard. Then the bulk is a comprehensive listing of current Scotch single malts including a brief presentation of the stated distillery and their recent expressions with nosing and tasting notes and grading. Then a shorter section is dedicated to the other single malt whiskies of the world. I would have liked full view photos of bottles. But this is more than compensated for with the excellent written content. Great guide for a beginner, like me, to compare different expressions and find your way in the pleasures of enjoying single malt whisky

This is a good resource to have if you are interested in single malts. The book tries to list the recent bottlings that are out there on the marketplace. There is also a quantitative approach to giving you a sense of the style of the malt that you're interested in. Always good to have a resource like this in your library.
Great book! Shipped right away.
