Paso Robles wine is some of the best produced within California’s wine regions; these six Paso Robles wineries rank tops. Grape growing was first introduced to the Paso Robles area in the late 18th century by Franciscan friars, and more than a century later, the region gained traction with the cultivation of zinfandel. By the mid-1900s, that attention shifted to Bordeaux grapes, such as cabernet sauvignon, but within a few decades, Paso Robles became a focal point in the Rhône Ranger movement, championing the potential for Rhône varieties-syrah, grenache, and mourvèdre among them-in California.

Founded in partnership with a French vineyard, Tablas Winery brought Rhone varietal grapes to Paso Robles – which makes it sound a lot easier than the actual process, involving a particularly dodgy-looking suitcase full of sticks getting stuck in custom for several years – and these French varietals have since become one of the hallmarks of Paso Robles wines.

A delightful and humorous book by husband and wife team, Bob & Cindy Rhodes that explores the wine country in and around Paso Robles, California. Tastings rooms range from the quaint: an attorney with a "tasting desk" who flies the Bear Flag when the public is welcome; to the sublime salons where the displayed artwork rivals the wines. The book is packed with information divided into handy categories, such as the best place to buy picnic wines, or white or red wines, or for gift shopping. A host of wineries and tasting rooms are wisely offering a handsome discount to anyone who brings in a copy of this book. My wife I can hardly wait to get back to old Paso Robles so we can test drive the book in person.

I believe I know Paso wines pretty well; this book makes me want to go back and check out a few wineries. Bob and Cindy certainly did their homework and their conclusions about "The Best ____" can be argued, but they've picked wineries you sure don't want to miss when you visit the area.

Lots of footwork went into it, and lots of great stories - that they share - come out of it. A fun read! Now go out and find some more of your own "bests".

Even though I have been to Paso Robles Wine Country a number of times I found this guide to be extremely helpful in deciding upon new places to visit! The free tastings were great, the commentary helpful and the way the book is arranged helps you decide how to spend what is usually limited time. Cheers to authors, Bob and Cindy!

I found this book to be a complete waste of money. First of all, there's no map of the Paso Robles wine area. Secondly, there's no index to look up a specific winery. The best you can do is to thumb through the book and hope to find what you're looking for, which wasn't worth my time. The free map at the inn where we stayed was much more useful. At least they got it right with Grape Escapes 2 which is a very helpful guide to the Temecula wine region.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is fun, witty, and an easy read. It is categorized by types of trips which makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I would not consider wine tasting in Paso Robles without it! This book is a "must have" for anyone visiting Paso Robles.
