The book's 23 pages abound with similar illustrations of homely activities and quotations such as Terence Conran's "Home is the heart of life. I recently reviewed a paperback French Cookbook that I have had for three decades that is disintegrating. This is its Italian Cookbook companion. In fact, the spine of the book is broken, so I have 2 parts to the book, with the spine threatening to split further if I open the pages too wide!

The author, Pauline Barrese, notes that (page 7) "The recipes compiled here are mostly my mother's. . . ." In short, this is a book featuring home cooking. As such, the recipes become more accessible to all of us who are amateurs at cooking.

As always, it is the recipes that are the heart of any cookbook (although, as with Alice Waters, there may be broader philosophical issues involved). The ones in this book are very straightforward. Some of my favorites:

Broccoli-Lemon salad. Easy to make, healthy, tasty. Some broccoli, some lemon, some garlic are the basics. Refrigerate and then enjoy! Yum.

Chicken parmesan is a standard Italian dish. The recipe here is simple and easy to do. It may not be haute cuisine, but when you want a nice meal with the family, this recipe suffices nicely. Same with Veal marsala. Pork chops Cremona is another easy to make but tasty dish, featuring marsala wine, rosemary, sage, garlic, pork chops, etc. And so on.

All in all, a nice cookbook that provides good Italian recipes that are within the skill levels of amateur chefs like me.
