Unlike many "Draw Your Own Comic Book" books, this one focuses primarily on digital imagery (post character design). That is truly the beauty of this particular presentation.

Manga is the world's most popular visual art—and within it, there's a subgenre dedicated to teenage girls about teenage girls—shoujo manga. From serialized soap operas about everyday girl drama or a high school swim team that transforms into magical warriors fighting for love and justice, there's no limit to what you can write or draw about, though typically there's a main heroine, a cute love interest, a best friend, and a geeky guy who has a crush on the main character. All of the characters are supremely adorable, with the trademark big, expressive manga eyes and cool outfits. Now, creating this popular genre is easier than ever with this ultimate guide that includes a CD to help you draw your own shoujo stories. From background scenes, speech balloons, color choices, accessories, tones, and effects (like speedlines), the CD offers a huge variety of templates you can work with in Photoshop and Illustrator and customize to your liking and your unique story. Whether you're a beginner who prefers to work with the line-art and accents provided, or a more experienced shoujo creator who adds her own flourishes, you'll get a complete explanation of everything, with tips and illustrations on how to use the programs effectively. Covering topics like dreaming up an interesting story line or concept, writing simple but compelling dialogue, creating page layouts and drawing hairstyles, outfits, and accessories—this is the first book to distill all the elements of shoujo into one easy-to-use guidebook.

Ok so I saw this book in the bookstore first and though it looked pretty good, but I didn't get to really look through all of it (the last half) because I had to leave early. This isn't a "how to draw book" so if that's what you want, then don't buy it! However, if you already know the drawing aspect but don't really know how to do the technical stuff like doing things on the computer and what you need to get started, then this is the right book for you. This book goes over how to use Photoshop to make comics/manga by using layers, textures, tones, and speed/action lines. You also get a CD with with a bunch of different things like tones, word balloons, action lines, comic layout setup boxes, backgrounds, and some characters. Sounds like a really cool deal right? My ONLY problem with this 125 page book is that HALF of the entire book is a catalog! It may be helpful to show what you get on the CD but it seems like such a waste of space in the book. I only payed 10$ so the price isn't too bad with the setup of the book, but this book(to me) is not worth it's original 26$ price for a 60 page tutorial book and some things you could probably find on Google. I don't regret buying it though.

Firstly, let's get one thing out of the way regarding this book. This is not JUST a Manga dyi book, this is a book that happens to use Manga art techniques instead of traditional superhero art styles.

Unlike many "Draw Your Own Comic Book" books, this one focuses primarily on digital imagery (post character design). That is truly the beauty of this particular presentation. Yishan LI breaks manga art into three digital sections, Digital manga, the `catalog' (characters), and accessories. As manga reader, if you have seen the effect whether tones, movement lines, shading, covers, or photo to art, the first section covers it in detail. One particularly enlightening section explained how photo images are converted to line art, a skill that seems universally used in all forms of illustrated fiction. Yishan brings `up' the photoshop tool bar and explains the use of each tool in sequence, a method I find very useful. Other books handle the writing of Shoujo manga/comics well so that does not have to be covered here.

Included with the book is a DVD rom that contains photoshop elements and accessories that can be used for your manga. There are characters, layout templates, balloons, fonts, backgrounds, and so much more.

A `good' book is as useful as the time it takes to read, a great presentation challenges you to dig into your art and practise. This is that kind of great book that should be recommended as a text for illustration manga classes. Highly recommended.

I'm quite disappointed about this book. This book is more suitable for those who can't draw people well but want to make story out if it. It has a few human sets that you can copy and paste into the Photoshop like playing with paper dolls with a set of accessories, very lil facial expression and body motion. And it also has already drawn background and a few set of empty comic panels that you can fill in to make your own story. Which is a lazy method to make it but sort of a fun way to create it. though its better to draw our own human figure to mark our own style. The thing i was most disappointed is the very little reference. I expecting it to have more tutorials and examples how and when to use the comic boxes and how to express the background dynamically in love scenes or drama scenes like a shoujo manga. but it didn't write up much to its title. Eventhough it did provide screentones and comic panels suitable for shoujo scenes.
