Historic San Francisco book.

Rand Richards is a San Francisco-based historian, author, and lecturer. Two of his books are local bestsellers: Historic San Francisco: A Concise History and Guide and Historic Walks in San Francisco: 18 Trails Through the City's Past. He has lectured before many groups, including the California Historical Society, the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, and the San Francisco History Association. The latter organization recently awarded him their Oscar Lewis Award for his contributions to knowledge of San Francisco history.

No American city has a more colorful history than San Francisco. In this unique book, author Rand Richards not only provides a vivid narrative of this special city from its very beginnings all the way through to the modern era, but also tells where to find the historic buildings, sites, museums, and artifacts that make that history come alive. Just a few of the things you will find in Historic San Francisco are the locations of, and the fascinating histories behind: A 1623 Spanish cannon that once guarded the entrance to the Golden Gate

Historic San Francisco : A Concise History and Guide. This book is a hybrid between a history book and a guide book. Each chapter historically chronicles a meaningful period of time betweensignificant milestones (. the goldrush of 1849 or the earthquake of 1906). Following each chapter is a guide to monuments, landmarks, and musuems that have items pertaining to the preceding information. There is a fair amount of illustrations and photographs and the writing style of Rand Richards is very readable. I highly recommend this book to anybody living in or planning to visit the San Francisco bay area.

Despite the devastation of 1906, historic buildings and artifacts survive from every period of San Francisco's history. This lively narrative of The City from its very beginnings all the way through the earthquake of 1989 tells how to find the historic buildings, sights, and artifacts that make that history come alive.Just a few of the things that you will find in Historic San Francisco are the locations of, and the fascinating histories behind: A 1623 Spanish cannon that once guarded the entrance to the Golden Gate. A gold nugget discovered by James Marshall at Coloma in January 1848. The last surviving Nob Hill mansion. Relics from the 1906 earthquake and fire, including clusters of melted dimes and pennies found in the ruins.Illustrated with more than 70 photographs, maps, and engravings, Historic San Francisco also has capsule biographies of ten San Franciscans, and historical walking tours of downtown San Francisco, Chinatown, Nob Hill, and Haight-Ashbury.

The work is very good, but perhaps a bit dated. As a work, it is lengthy with useful biographical essays, but less useful places to see, many of these well outside the city in the Bay Area. The illustrations are all B & W. The conversational tone is good. A newer alternative is Chronicles of Old San Francisco of the Museyon Guides by Gael Chandler, with color illustrations, prose as lively, differing details that seem as interesting and with perhaps a better flow. Both books have a few tours, those in this work relegate to a later section where they are easier to find and unlike the few tours of the work here, and of an accompanying volume by Mr. Richards, the tours have handy thumbprint photos to help you find your way along the tour.

Good ,clear exposition of people and events that created San Francisco.
I wasn't that interested in the tour guide, but for a first-time visitor, it would be excellent.
  • Forcestalker

The book is a great, interesting read. The information is condensed, clear and flows easily- however the book would really really benefit by including a map of the MODERN city, this way a reader can see exactly where some of the things the book discusses took place.
Great book!
