Balfron (Scottish Gaelic: Both Fron) is a village in the Stirling council area of Scotland. It is situated near Endrick Water on the A875 road, 18 miles (29 km) west of Stirling and 16 miles (26 km) north of Glasgow. Although a rural settlement, it lies within commuting distance of Glasgow, and serves as a dormitory village. The name means 'cottage of mourning' in Gaelic. This originates from a legend that the village was attacked by wolves, which stole children out of their homes.
Balfron Heritage Group. The Group was founded in 1989 to celebrate the bicentenary of Ballindalloch Mill.

Balfron used to be a tiny village where the Clachan stands now. When Robert Dunmore came to the village he saw how powerful the River Endrick was and decided to build a cotton mill on the banks of the river. He was born in Endrick Cottage at the foot of the village. Alexander designed buildings: he was an architect. He took many of his ideas from the buildings of Ancient Greece. This gave him the nickname Greek Thomson although he never visited Greece.
Jim Thompson dedicated his life to organizing a network of artisans, helping to upgrade their looms, introducing new techniques and designs thereby enabling Thai weavers to create silks that would dazzle the world. By 1950 he had founded The Thai Silk Company, majority‑owned by Thais, aimed in part at sustaining the traditional livelihoods, culture and dignity of local weavers and silk farmers.
