Of the four books I have read by Peter Higginbotham about workhouses, this is the most disappointing. As a northerner, I was anticipating interesting information about workhouses across the north of England

As a northerner, I was anticipating interesting information about workhouses across the north of England. What I received was a listing of workhouses, with a minimal of information about any particular institution. Early pages in the book repeat information in the other volumes, so was redundant knowledge to me, having read the other three books

Workhouses of the North, by Peter Higginbotham (Tempus Publications, 1999). Jennifer Worth trained as a nurse at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, and was later ward sister at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital in London, then the Marie Curie Hospital, also in London. Jennifer died in May 2011 after a short illness, leaving her husband Philip, two daughters and three grandchildren. Her books have all been bestsellers.
