James Joll's "Europe Since 1870" is an excellent history of this period up to about the 1970's or so. Indeed, it is about the best there is apart from Felix Gilbert's famous "The End of the European Era 1890 to the Present" which is more comprehensive and extensive on the post war (WW. . Indeed, it is about the best there is apart from Felix Gilbert's famous "The End of the European Era 1890 to the Present" which is more comprehensive and extensive on the post war (WW2 that is!) period. Other volumes that cover international history are worth reading for their European content especially Keylor's "The Twentieth Century World and Beyond" and Woodruff's "A Concise History of the Modern World.

Some thirty years after Tierney's book was published a summing up in the New Catholic Encyclopedia mentioned various criticisms of the work but added that "Most scholars recognize that Tierney correctly located in the late 13th and early 14th centuries the first discussions of papal infallibility" and that, as regards other disputed points in his work, "the discussion continues.
