Armoured Warfare in the Korean War: Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives (Images of War) Paperback – January 19, 2013. by. Anthony Tucker-Jones (Author). This book doesn't really illuminate the reader about the use of armor in the Korean War. It gives us an overview of the war, and the photos used are tremendous. But, it isn't a really great reference. In this interesting work by Anthony Tucker-Jones, we find page after page of photographs from that war - many of which have never been published elsewhere.

Anthony Tucker-Jones. After the Second World War, military analysts thought that the only place significant armored forces were ever likely to confront each other again was in central Europe where the Nato alliance would fend off the Soviet Red Army. Then during the Korean War of 1950-53 both sides deployed large numbers of armored fighting vehicles, and this neglected aspect of the conflict is the subject of Anthony Tucker-Joness photographic history. Korea, with its rugged mountains, narrow passes, steep valleys and waterlogged fields was not ideal tank country so the armor mainly supported.

After the Second World War, military analysts thought that the only place significant armored forces were ever likely to confront each other again was in central Europe where the Nato alliance would fend off the Soviet Red Army. Then during the Korean War of 1950-53 both sides deployed large numbers of armored fighting vehicles, and this neglected aspect of the conflict is the subject of Anthony Tucker-Jones’s photographic history. Korea, with its rugged mountains, narrow passes, steep valleys and waterlogged fields was not ideal tank country so the armor mainly supported the infantry and rarely engaged in battles of maneuver. Yet the wide variety of armor supporting UN and North Korean forces played a vital if unorthodox role in the swiftly moving campaigns. For this fascinating book over 180 contemporary photographs have been selected to show Soviet-built T-34/85s and Su-76s, American M4 Shermans, M26 Pershings and M46 Pattons, and British Cromwells and Centurions in action in one of the defining conflicts of the Cold War.

Whenever people think of the wars and conflicts of the 20th Century, the Korean War is often overlooked. Maybe this is because, once all the gains and losses had been gained and lost, both sides were back almost exactly where they began and, as the years since have continued to prove, nothing much was ever achieved by the North Koreans at great cost to both sides!

In this interesting work by Anthony Tucker-Jones, we find page after page of photographs from that war - many of which have never been published elsewhere. I was, however, rather disappointed with the rather flippant chapter headings - through which the book seeks to tell the story of the Korean War by placing events in chronological order as follows; Uncle Joe's Koreans, The North Korean Steamroller, RoK's Armour, Uncle Sam holds the line, Britain and the UN to the Rescue, Inchon Triumph, Korean Swansong, Turning the Tide, First Spring Offensive and, finally, The Static War.

From these, even without reading further, one gets the impression of; Soviet influence in North Korea, the invasion of South Korea by overwhelming forces, US Forces providing a stiff resistance, the arrival of British and UN Forces and, eventually, back to where it all began. And that is pretty much the message this author portrays. Where I would commend the work is in the expert way in which he is able to condense each political and military situation into very few words at the beginning of each chapter and the excellent choice of photographs which support that narrative. Where I would take issue is, of course with the suggestion that Britain and the UN came to the rescue of the US and I suspect such a heading will not appeal to the brave servicemen from the USA! That said, the impression gained from that particular chapter heading is not apparent in the actual text where the forces of all allied countries are given fair treatment.

Over 180 photographs from the period and a well-explained, albeit brief, summary of events, this book will do much to explain the Korean War to those with no knowledge at all and will please many an expert with the carefully selected choice of photographs.

All things considered, the book is exactly as described on the cover as providing "Rare photographs from Wartime Archives."

The book delivers what it says, but more detail in the text would have been nice. Pix are nice, good sized.
