I hasve just looked at a book Battle-Axe Blenheims, 105 Sqn RAF at War 1940-41' by Stuart Scott published by Alan Sutton . I see no reason why 139 Sqn which worked so closely with 105 Sqn, should not be similarly equipped.

I hasve just looked at a book Battle-Axe Blenheims, 105 Sqn RAF at War 1940-41' by Stuart Scott published by Alan Sutton Publishing Ltd c 1996. 82 Sqn Blenheims also had the same barbet in 1940.

Originally published in 1996 and now available in paperback, a history of Blenheim squadron No.105 which examines their low-level, daylight bombing operations from bases in Norfolk and Malta, between 1940 and 1941.

Superb! The real story of what is was like in the Blenheims of 105! This crew should have been decorated and was not and were lost on their last Malta mission. What a shame. Read it and draw your own conclusions. Obvious to me the CO looked down on NCO aircrew.

While the four-engine bombers get all the attention, RAF Bomber Command began the war with blunt weapons. While the Hampdens, Wellingtons and Whitleys were considered 'Mainline', there was a 'light' bomber. Relying on speed, it was cheap, carried a 1,000 lb bombload, used just three crew, and it was cheap. Doctrine would have them making low-level attacks behind the front, defended by its' dorsal/rear gunner. Little did they know how many flak guns could be fielded by Germany; even at sea, the ships could deal killing blows to attackers.
The Battle-axe referred to was contained on the 105 Sqdn crest, and it was a widely traveled unit. Operating first from England, against the ports and convoys on occupied northern Europe, they demonstrated how dangerous the doctrine was. Eventually moved to Malta, the planes and crews performed yeoman service against shipping to North Africa and islands held by Axis forces.
Note the author's family interest in those brave crews. Appendices contain bio of Hughie Edwards, VC, 105 Sqdn targets, aircraft used, honor roll of members, battle honors and citations.
