Joseph Emerson Worcester (August 24, 1784 – October 27, 1865) was an American lexicographer who was the chief competitor to Noah Webster of Webster's Dictionary in the ry.

Joseph Emerson Worcester (August 24, 1784 – October 27, 1865) was an American lexicographer who was the chief competitor to Noah Webster of Webster's Dictionary in the ry. Their rivalry became known as the "dictionary wars". Worcester's dictionaries focused on traditional pronunciation and spelling, unlike Noah Webster's attempts to Americanize words.

Various eras have been adopted in different ages, and bj different nations, in the computation of time, and in adjusting the dates of events recorded in history. Some of the most important only of these eras can be here mentioned. The Greeks computed their time by the era of the Olympiads, which date from the year 776 B. being the year in which Corcebus was successful at the Olympic games. This era differed from all others, in being reckoned by periods of four years, instead of single years.
