It is more detailed than I want

Born in London in 1925 - the son of the novelist and educationist Guy Pocock - he was educated at Westminster School and Cheltenham College, joining the Royal Navy in 1943. It is more detailed than I want. I wanted more of an overview than a hour by hour history.

Stopping Napoleon book. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read.

Napoleon himself materialised at his most magnificent in Venice and in humiliating exile on Elba. There were triumphs and disasters in remote and exotic places, and a Trafalgar in miniature was fought between frigate squadrons in the Adriatic. The Peninsular War might well have been fought in another peninsula: Italy.

After Trafalgar, Napoleon dropped his plans to invade Britain and looked eastward instead. The British started rather well, trouncing the French at Maida in their first victory on land in the Napoleonic wars. The medieval palace of the Alhambra (from the Arabic al-hamra, meaning "red") remains a potent symbol of Moorish architecture and Islamic culture.

I enjoyed the book. There are many fascinating characters who seem to thrive on war. I am glad I want around then. The author kept my attention.

Scholarly without presumption, informative with little-known side lights. All-in-all, reads more like a personal journal than a treatise, making it almost a conversation.

I love Tom Pocock's books for entertainment as well as excellent research value. I'd recommend this and The Terror Before Trafalgar for really feeling the people of the time and their loves, hates, aspriations and secrets.

Good read even if a bit slow. But history moves slowly.

The author has done a lot of research and gives a detailed account of the war in the Mediterranean. It is more detailed than I want. I wanted more of an overview than a hour by hour history.

If you like the British sailing sagas this is for you. It is entertaining and fun to read.
I purchased this text to better understand the process of Napoleon's defeat in the Mediterranean. It is written with specific names and dates of ump-teen events, names of those having a significant role and those of dubious importance. So many names that each became insignificant for me. It would have been much more interesting if only the significant players were identified and only the meaningful battles. Just my take--I finished the book, but it was a challenge. Like being back in High School.
