S. Navy photo & partial text from the book "IOWA CLASS BATTLESHIPS-Their Design, Weapons and Equipment" by Robert F. Sumrall & Tom Walkowiak, submitted by Mike Green. In this photograph of the Iowa (BB-61), taken 30 September 1940, construction of the double and triple bottoms is clearly shown. The tunnel stern begins to take shape aft as the half siding for the keel rises on the plating supports. Note the prefabricated sections of the double and triple bottoms stacked aft ready to be dropped into place.
