Persecution for the church has now come to our own shores and, quite honestly, we are ill prepared for it. Which raises the all important question: Is there something we can do now, before the persecution begins in earnest, to prepare for what is soon to happen? And the answer is, yes.
I realized that I hadn’t been preparing to suffer for Christ. The thought had never even crossed my mind! In 1 Peter 3, the apostle wanted to prepare Christians for the threat of persecution that faced them daily. He instructed them to live a life marked by love and free from evil (v. -12). If persecution still came, Peter knew it would be better to suffer for doing good than for doing evil (. 7)
How might many self-identified Christians respond to that bold and shocking statement? I think they might . In other words, Christ’s call to us to come and die is a perfect act of mercy. It is our only hope for human dignity in this life and eternal happiness in the next
How might many self-identified Christians respond to that bold and shocking statement? I think they might protest with words like these, Why would Christ ask us to come and die? Doesn’t He know how busy we are? Doesn’t He know how important we are? We are doing vast and urgent things! . It is our only hope for human dignity in this life and eternal happiness in the next. Accepting Christ’s call to come and die, accepting the baptism which He undergoes, accepting the chalice which He must drink (Mark 10:38) is the only sane choice.
