England was not a hospitable place for Baptists and many other Christians in the 1600s and 1700s. This book helps the reader appreciate the conditions that led them to defend their understanding of Christ's teachings even when they were imprisoned for their faith and practices.

No Armor for the Back: Baptist Prison Writings, 1600s-1700s.

Historian Keith E. Durso has done just that, in a fine volume that surveys the nature of Baptist dissent and the response of various establishmentarian communities to Baptist ideals and individuals. Durso's work also demonstrates something of the fluidity of individuals who participated in multiple dissenting movements of the seventeenth century.

1700s recounts the story of several Baptists who refused to yield to political and ecclesiastical pressures to conform. Lists with This Book. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Durso has done just that, in a fine volume . Durso brings together multiple primary sources from or about the dissenters themselves. So many sectarian movements appeared during this time that it was inevitable that individuals would be impacted by multiple ideologies.

These writings include letters, tracts, books, and poems. England was not a hospitable place for Baptists and many other Christians in the 1600s and 1700s. Durso has provided both an informative and encouraging work for both students of Baptist history as well as contemporary pastors seeking to develop a Baptist theology of persecution. This latter task will become increasing important practically, I fear, in the days to come. This book helps the reader appreciate the conditions that led them to defend their understanding of Christ’s teachings even when they were imprisoned for their faith and practices.

This book is absolutely extraordinary to know what happened in the past, to have a better reverence and appreciation of where we stand today, because of these Christians' zeal and true love for the Lord.

I thought at first this book may be a bit depressing or something to make one feel "down", in a sense; but rather, it was quite the opposite. 'No Armor for the Back' in fact, creates a stronger zeal, and courage, to stand for Truth, and to proclaim it to all who do not know. If we don't know how the past occurred, we will make the same mistakes, or perhaps get ourselves in worse situations.

Hosea 4:6 — My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Carefully researched and still very readable.
