This book was given to me by my sister's now ex -boyfriend as he was cleaning out his closet long ago.
This exact book is very detailed and has empowered me to paint my own apartment ,twice,
fix my shower,fix a hole in the wall,weatherize my windows,
Learn how to understand how my wood floors where to be repaired and so much more.
This book empowers me to go into a hard ware store to make an educated purchase and wise choice,knowing ahead of time exactly what i need.
I love to end up knowing more than some know it all man who thinks just because i am a girl ,that
i am helpless,many instances they walk up to me trying to confuse me and flirt at the same time with what they think are complicated and unknown words referring to tool or materials needed ...i am quiet and wait until
they are finished jabbering ,giving their bad advice ,then sweetly and quietly make a better choice,often they are so embarrassed and their egos shriveled ,walking away like a dog with their tails between their legs..ha..ha..it
is my latest pass time ,to
enjoy to put them in their place.
After years of thinking that just because someone works in a hardware store and wears a smock
with a name tag ,makes them competent to guide me to make wise selections,
leading to endless returns and projects gone awry
well ...now that is a thing of the past thanks to this awesome book.

I had high hopes for this book, especially given all of the great reviews. If I have clear instructions, I'm willing to take on just about any project (even though I'm a novice at home repairs).

This book, however, left me feeling overwhelmed. For each project there are about 6 pictures explaining the steps of the repair. The pictures give you a good overview of what's involved, but they're not really detailed enough to guide you through the nitty-gritty. In other words, they leave room for a lot of error. With the exception of a few simple repairs, I think I'd be better off finding a video online and watching someone complete the project from start to finish.

My overall impression is that this book would be great for someone who's already quite handy/experienced at home repair and wants to apply those skills to new projects.

I got this book pretty quick in the mail (almost everything from Amazon seems to ship a lot quicker than you'd expect) but I was a bit disappointed that it's cover seemed kind of ''beat up''!! This is a hard-cover book and the binding/seam in the center was not glued down and the corners were bent/tore, but the inside pages seem to be fine!! I mean obviously that's not a huge deal, but I guess when you buy something new you expect it to be in almost flawless condition. ***Anyways, about the book itself; it really does cover a wide range of DIY topics for us homeowners to tackle ourselves!! The Table-of-Contents is nicely arranged titled; Interior (tons on fixing & installing floors, walls, painting etc.) Exterior (everything from fixing roofs, concrete, steps, sidewalks, decks etc.) Plumbing and Wiring (how plumbing works, how to install & fix plumbing problems etc -AND- how your electric works, testing & fixing common problems, changing electrical, safety etc.) Heating, Ventilation and A.C. (how to maintain your appliances, common problems & fixes and installing etc). So that was a 'quick' rundown of the book... Lots of nice detailed pictures and super easy to understand and follow guides!! Really great book if you want to learn how to do all those little projects, but would feel much better having step by step directions to guide ya through (Plus save yourself a bit of money)!!

I'm reading the other reviews here, so I thought I'd weigh in, hoping it will help the prospective buyer. This book is about as good as it gets for do-it-yourself home repair. Lots of home repairs are far easier than you think, and just take time and maybe some new tools. Even with the cost of new tools, it will often be cheaper than calling a professional. Yes--there are really complicated repairs I would leave to a professional, but this book helps with the simple things that you just need basic instruction on.

Case in point--my toilet was leaking from the base. I have never installed a toilet or taken one apart. I had no clue why it was leaking. I turned to the leaky toilet page and saw that there is something called the "closet" where the toilet connects to the floor and there is a wax seal that may have leaked. A plumber could cost $50-$100 just to come out and look at the toilet. Maybe more for his labor.

I went to Home Depot and bought a new wax seal for $3.50, and a mini-shop vac for $40 (new tool--yay!). Turned off the water valve, flushed the toilet, used the shop-vac to suck out the residual water, disconnected the water line, removed the 2 bolts connecting the tank to the bowl and removed the tank, removed the 2 bolts connecting the bowl to the floor and removed the bowl. Scrape off the old wax, put on the new wax, bolt bowl to floor, bolt tank to bowl, reconnect water. Yes--I may have figured this out on my own, but one is always hesitant to go in to a job not knowing what to expect. This book holds your hand a bit and has great photos. Now, if I had removed the toilet and found the closet flange overly corroded, I may have called a plumber. But I fixed the whole thing for $43.50, an hour of time, and I got a new shop-vac!

If you don't know a screwdriver from a hammer, then no book in the world, including this one, will help you. But if you have basic tool knowledge and a bit of courage, this book is the perfect and only companion you need. And when all else fails, you can always call a professional to fix it up. Armed with lingo from this book, you will be able to describe the problem better and perhaps avoid being ripped off as well.
