Great book. I wish I had read it before I started riding. I'm amazed how complete it is. It's like a step by step of how to ride. It's filled in a lot of gaps of the why things are done and how they are done. Reading this book will save you a ton of money on lessons. If you were the type of person who learns well just from reading a book and with very few lessons you could be a quite knowedgable rider needing more practice the lessons.I would also recommend Sally Swifts "Centered Riding2".

This is one of the best books on riding I have read. Being a livery user of horses, I know less than some. I picked up a lot of useful info in this book and found it well worth the price. You can always learn from more experienced equestrians. I respect Don's knowledge and the manner in which he conveys it.

I bought the ORIGINAL book and was really impressed with it. So, I thought the new updated version would be a good buy. I was truly disappointed in it. The authors have conformed to the sick, drugged and beaten down, peanut roller look of today's western pleasure horses with their heads in the sand. The ORIGINAL book shows horses like they were ridden fifty years ago, with their heads up and with a light contact on the bit, looking proud and happy. Sad the authors have ruined what I thought was the 'real' western horse and gone with a fad and ruined what used to be 'real western horse'. If you want a book for real horses and real riding buy the original version. You can sometimes find them on EBay.
