I bought this as soon as we had our first puppy (a mini dachshund) picked out. Thank God that I did. It was our first time having a puppy and this beginner's guide allowed me and my wife to know what we were in for and also helped us understand our pup's instincts and natural born habits. I am thankful that I had it from the beginning because I think it influenced my puppy training. Our "pup" is now almost 3 years old, perfectly potty trained, and as loving as can be!

Focused on readers still deciding whether to get a Dachshund or not. If you already have one there isn't enough new information explaining particular quirks of the breed, like their rolling whale eyes, or their picky eating habits. But it does have lots of info on how to take care of a dog in general. So if you own a Dachshund and are trying to understand him/her better, this book is not what you are looking for. It even seems like the author doesn't own a Dachshund herself.

I enjoyed the organization and structure of the book, broad range of the most important information for any Dachshund owner. A must have as it makes for a great resource book.

Generally speaking the information is rather helpful from first time dachshund owners who has not done much research on the breed. Great for those considering adopting a Dachshund. However, since I have a couple of more books that specifically talks about Dachshund, this one seems to be more generalised - only 20 pages worth of information is useful to my situation.

It is a nice addition to my existing Dachshund collection, but I would not say that it is the definite guide to dachshund.

My extended family owns a grand total of 7 adorably long and personality-laden dachshunds. This book does a great job at explaining their quirks and needs from a breed standpoint as well as tips that are good for any dog owner to know.

The layout and format of this book is very simple and straight forward, making the reading experience as easy as possible. I would highly recommend this book for both dachshund beginners and long time owners of the cutest longdog breed out there!

I've already had one dachshund and raised her without the benefit of this book. Sadly, she passed a few months ago and, in a fit of grief fed anxiety, I decided to face my haunting questions by acknowledging that I do not know it all. Now I know that I will never know it all but what I do know now is already paying off. Instead of a strained "no" based relationship with my new puppy, we already have a relaxed "you good boy!!!" based relationship. He arrived after a 12 hour journey yesterday and after a few sessions of ignoring unwanted behaviour and praising wanted behaviour to the skies, he is trotting happily with me on the lead, he comes when I call (mostly), is happy to be groomed, comfortable in the house and slept pretty much all night on the first night.

If you're not the one with short furry legs and a gorgeous long nose and ears in your household, you need to read this book. Besides, it's a great read just for the pleasure of reading it.

This reviewer has owned countless dogs, from beagles to spaniels to pit bulls to weimaraners--not to mention several mongrels thrown in for good measure. Yet I've never owned a dachshund, and lately I've been intrigued by the possibility of having a little wiener dog running around the house. I didn't know all that much about the breed, and I wanted to know if its temperament and characteristics would be compatible in my household. So I turned to Eve Adamson's DACHSHUNDS FOR DUMMIES; what a gold mine of information!

Everything you need to know about dachshunds is in this book, and I mean everything. Dachshunds are a playful, often feisty, very intelligent breed; here I learned if I wasn't disciplined and consistent with my training and regimen, this adorable little dog would quickly be in charge! Yet here in this book so much more is covered, from choosing the right dachsie to diet to essentials to health issues (including detailed info on how to prevent the dachshund's proclivity for back injuries). Plus Adamson gives a rich texture of what I would call generic tips regarding house training, and training in general, of your dog. She also lists several websites readers can visit for more detailed info on a myriad of topics, from adoption to competition (for the true gung-ho types). Alas, I learned that, cute as they may be, a dachshund isn't right for me; yet I'm grateful to have become knowledgeable about the breed, thanks to DACHSHUNDS FOR DUMMIES.

I adopted my first Dachshund 1.5 years ago, and this book was such a great help in so many ways.

It taught even me (single guy), how to fully take care of my little pal from hygiene down to diet. It tells you the types of things I would have never known (dogs are allergic to onions?!), and the tone is laid back and a pleasure to read.

House breaking was a breeze using the advice here, as well as training in other aspects.

If you are about to adopt/buy your first Dachshund, I highly recommend picking up this book. It made my and my dog's life much better!
