Western Writers of America, founded 1953, promotes literature, both fictional and non-fictional, pertaining to the American West. Although its founders wrote traditional western fiction, the more than six hundred current members also include historians and other non-fiction writers as well as authors from other genres. WWA was founded by six authors, including D. B. Newton.

From the endless battles of sibling rivalry to the endless worries about getting indifferent students into—and then graduated from—college, raising boys is the adventure of a lifetime for any mother. Prudence Mackintosh has not only survived the adventure but has also written about it with her signature wit and style. Her essays about life with sons Jack, Drew, and William have entertained the readers of Texas Monthly and other prominent magazines for nearly three decades, offering solace to similarly beleaguered parents and a knowing chuckle to everyone who enjoys watching the real-life sitcom of a fundamentally happy, intact family.

Along the way, she offers wise and witty reflections on being a woman at midlife, supporting her sons through the beginning of their adult lives and her parents through the end of theirs.

Prompt delivery as promised and in good condition. I had read the author’s other books and found this one to be equally as good...maybe not as hilarious, the boys have grown after all, but equally as insightful.

I've followed Prudence Mackintosh's articles in Texas Monthly for over 30 years. This book is a great wrap-up of her years of raising boys, of which I have 4. I immediately bought a copy for my daughter's mother-in-law, who has 5 because what can you do besides laugh?

There really are only a few books a parent needs to "do it right." Joan Beck's "How to Raise a Brighter Child" and Prudence MackIntosh's essays in her trilogy of books: "Thundering Sneakers," Retreads," and "Sneaking Out." The MackIntosh books are better than chocolate, whether you have a boy or a girl. And on those frequent occasions when I am at my wits' end and rapidly losing perspective, her books bring me right back. You'll laugh with a lump in your throat the whole way through.
