The inside cover blurb really tells it all: the comprehensive pictorial and statistical record of the 1974 movie season with more than 1000 photographs. Always a fantastic guide to the year's films; an annual that contains vital information but doesn't include a synopsis, critic comments or star ratings.
1974 was a great year, producing at least three all-time American film classics; the Francis Ford Coppola duo "The Godfather Part II" (in my opinion, even better than "The Godfather") and "The Conversation" plus Polanski's "Chinatown". There were classy thrillers like "The Parallax View", "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" and "The Odessa File". Disaster flicks like "The Towering Inferno", "Airport '75" and "Earthquake" (remember Sensurround?). Disasters in different ways; "Mame", "Daisy Miller" and "The Great Gatsby". Mel Brooks in his prime with "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein". Dustin Hoffman as Lenny Bruce. All-star international hits: "Murder on the Orient Express". In the foreign-language market, releases from grand masters: Ozu ("Early Spring"), Fellini ("Amarcord"), Bergman ("Scenes From a Marriage"), Malle ("Lacombe Lucien") and Bunuel ("The Phantom of Liberty").
Among the Promising New Actors: Richard Dreyfuss, Martin Sheen and Bernadette Peters and in the obituaries, a fond farewell to Samuel Goldwyn, Bud Abbott, Jack Benny, Walter Brennan and Agnes Moorehead et al.
