Natasha Mostert enjoys taking a mainstream obscure subject and turning it into a suspense novel that includes paranormal events, heroes and heroines that border on the dark side and seekers of the truth so intense they are willing to give up their lives, loves and economic bounty for just a glimpse or grasp at verity of the absolute Platonic level. In her novel "The Other Side of Silence," she employs the little known mystery of the Pythagorean Comma* to craft a tale of frightening world proportions with regard to sound and its impact on the earth as a living organism. As always, her premise intrigues and promises to extract a story that is well worth its reading time--filling the participant with questions that beg answers and further research. She is a thinking man's novelist. However, in this offering as in her newer novel "Keeper of Light and Dust," she relies upon a super villain of Darth Vadar proportions that tinges the whole experience with a "been there-done that" feeling that falls short and deteriorates the overall impact of the novel.

In "Silence," Jon and Stephen, two highly intelligent friends formulate a computer game that enables them to utilize large mainframe computer time to puzzle out the derivation of the perfect musical scale--one not infected by the infamous comma. The game's popularity provides infectious and addictive entertainment for millions of users around the world; the quest nature of its premise eventually entitles its players to join in the composition of "Angel Music," oddly discordant patterns of sound that seem to provoke violence in its listeners.

When Jon meets Tia for the first time, he is the non-stop American in primal South Africa, searching for the quintessential sound that will solve a mathematical puzzle centuries old. Fascinated by the thought of testing out the rock gongs on Tia's property, he persuades her to welcome not only his investigation but, his eventual intervention into her heart. They romance to the backdrop of excitement generated by the ever-evolving perfect scale as millions more users succumb to the siren's call of Angel Music they themselves create and discover that they are forever lovers.

Sadly, this does not sit well with friend and partner Stephen. When he first lays eyes on Tia, he is moved beyond comprehension. Motivated partly by envy and partly by an attraction that ties into his life philosophy, he does his best to accelerate the building of the scale while ensuring that Tia ultimately belongs to him.

As in all her other novels, Mostert fashions a sophisticated world with complicated players and interrelationships. Unfortunately, the advent of Stephen and his agenda weakens the more exciting scenario of a world immunized by so much noise it cannot delineate sound. The probability curve collapses within the love triangle and enables Mostert to abandon the what-ifs behind the idea of actually hearing the music of the spheres.

Bottom Line? In "The Other Side of Silence," Mostert integrates the mystical: Pythagoras' music of the spheres, the relationship between music and mathematics and the concept of the primordial vibrational sound "om"--within a framework of modern relationships that allow the reader's mind to skirt along a frontier of metaphysical thought. It's a good read despite a cartoonish and dastardly villain permeating each scene with his insidious evil. Recommended.
