He slid into the booth next to her, and she felt his knee press against hers. Harry Schwartz was debonair. His hair was styled, his clothes mod without clashing with his attorney image, and his eyes constantly flirted. Hello, darling, he said and kissed her. What a delight to have lunch with you. I’ve been hoping for months.

The Wizard of Death - Richard Forrest. A gasp issued from the crowd

The Wizard of Death - Richard Forrest. 1. Gerbils and gopher. es, The Gopher on the Green might work. A political rally had replaced long-ago musters of militia on the town green as Lyon Wentworth sat on a warm car fender and wondered if The Gopher on the Green would be a workable title for his next children’s book. He let his mind wander and paid scant attention to the speaker’s platform near the Civil War monument.

But when he learns that Bea was also a target, the mild-mannered children’s book author must find the courage to hunt an assassin before he strikes again

When he learns a bullet was meant for his wife, children’s author Lyon Wentworth investigates an assassination, in this. But when he learns that Bea was also a target, the mild-mannered children’s book author must find the courage to hunt an assassin before he strikes again. Written in the rough-and-tumble political climate of the late 1970s, The Wizard of Death is a small-town thriller unlike any other. Starring a delightful husband-and-wife sleuthing team, it’s as quick and shocking as an assassin’s bullet.

This is the second book in the Lyon and Bea Wentworth series and I wish I had read the first. Does Lyon have some training as a spy? If not, then he is intuitive to an unlikely degree. This is very light reading but fun. I find the title has nothing much to do with the plot.

I received a review copy of "The Wizard of Death" by Richard Forrest (Open Road) through NetGalley.com.

Second in the series featuring Bea and Lyon Wentworth. Lyon is the writer of juvenile fiction and Bea is a Connecticut state senator. At a political rally, she introduces Randolph Llewyn, the gubernatorial nominee, and as she turns to shake hands with him, two shots ring out, killing Llewyn. Bea, must once again solve a murder.

I like Forrest's characters. His sleuth is unusual, and married to a strong woman. His books are enjoyable to read and I wish there were real Wobblies.
