Richard Sharpe and the Battle of Fuentes de Onoro, May 1811. This, like Sharpe’s Rifles, was written at the request of the TV producers, though I can’t remember why they wanted this one. It tells the ghastly tale of the battle of Fuentes d’Onoro, a bloody struggle on the Portuguese frontier which deteriorated into a gutter fight in the narrow alleys of a small village. It was a French defeat, but they still chiselled it into the Arc de Triomphe as a victory – I guess they were short of victories so just added a few defeats to make up the numbers. Sharpe is a series of historical fiction stories by Bernard Cornwell centered on the character of Richard Sharpe. The stories formed the basis for an ITV television series featuring Sean Bean in the title role. Cornwell's series is composed of several novels and short stories, and charts Sharpe's progress in the British Army during the Napoleonic Wars.

In the spring of 1811, as one of the most bitter battles of the Peninsular War is about to commence, the hopes of all of Britain are turned toward Spain, where victory will be won or lost. A skilled leader and proven hero, Colonel Richard Sharpe has taken charge of a ragtag Irish battalion from the king of Spain's household guard. Poorly equipped and untrained, they are easily ambushed by an elite French unit commanded by Sharpe's deadly enemy, Brigadier General Guy Loup. Sharpe and Loup have tangled before, and now the fighting wolf means to exact his revenge. But something goes terribly wrong in their bloody skirmish, and Sharpe is faced with the ruin of his career and reputation. Stripped of all but his honor, spirit, and courage, Sharpe must lead his men to glory on the bloody streets of Spain to redeem himself in the eyes of his country--or die trying.

I would recommend this book to any of my friends or family. I've got started very late in reading Mr. Cromwell's material. As of the last six months I have gone through three quarters of all your novels. All that is is remaining is the Sharpe's series , I'm at the year 1811. Being behind as I am, I'm going from one read to the next . Excellent reading. Great enjoyment. As I'm a chronic pain patient, it helps me get lost in the story. In some way ease the pain. This in itself says a lot for the powerful writing you do Sir. I thank you for your brilliant writing. Please keep it up for as long as it feels good to do so. Harmon L. Davis lll.

Gripping historical adventure as the impossible hero beckons the reader through suspense and a pinch of humour, to suspend disbelief and plunge headfirst through the gunsmoke of life for the common soldier in Wellington's Peninsula Campaign.

Cornwell is an outstanding writer; I did not enjoy the violence as it become tedious but it is very well done by Cornwell. His research into the era and the 1811 battle history is excellent, of course. Cornwell is master of this time period piece and the Sharpe character is wonderful- heroic, honorable, loyal and a very empathetic protagonist. It is a good ride to just to enjoy history and Cornwell's version through the eyes of Sharpe. It is easy to get into the Sharpe series.

One of Cornwall's many entertaining, gritty accounts of Britain's role in the Napoleonic Peninsular War from the perspective of a bastard ex-thief turned British officer. This story, like Cornwall's others on Britain's war in Portugal and Spain, has a good historical grounding and is replete with detailed, gory battle scenes derived from contemporary accounts.

I have slowly worked my way through the Sharpe series and recommend it highly. In particular I enjoy the realistic details of military life and war and Cromwell's concise exposition of the action and tactics he is describing. The writing flows well and he provides vivid descriptions of the action. Though the plots are predictable and interchangeable from one book to another, it is still an enjoyable read and the dramatic tension never waivers. It is worthwhile following up with some historical research after reading his books to compare his descriptions of battles to the actual events. Sharpe's Battle was no exception.

Cornwell continues to keep me highly entertained with his historical fiction. The characters are the best. Enjoy these tales as much as I do.

I haven't found one of the books in this series a disappointment. Each one has a similar "formula" but the characters intertwine between all the books and the villains just get better and better. I've loved the series thus far.
I read this series, start to finish. Chronological order. Every book is excellent . the story in full is excellent.
All winter, rainy days, fireplace, coffee, cookies. Great time spent with wonderful characters, good and bad.
The stories built into history lessons were just masterful.
Sorry, Do to so many read, I am copying one review for all. Singularly or Collectively, you can not go wrong with Bernard Cornwell.
