Blake's style is as steamy as a still July night on the bayou, as overwhelmingly hot as Cajun spice. A widow at twenty-five, beautiful Elise Laffont had been taught by her brutal husband to hate sex and men. She was quite content to manage her small Louisiana farm alone - until a Natchez Indian uprising forced her to flee.

While I commend Jennifer Blake for her extensive research and attempt to provide historical accuracy in her story, I think that she may have crossed the line into too much detail early in the book. I hate to leave a book unfinished, and I did eventually get through this one, but I was tempted several times to just let it go. The detail in the clothes and the hair and the wilderness and the politics and the tribal culture and the back feuding and the trade routes and the... you get the point. It was interesting at first to have that much historical detail, but then it simply overshadowed the plot and characters and made it a very unwieldy read. I freely admit that I don't usually go for historical romances, so maybe this was just not my cup of tea.

Elise a young French woman who settled in 1730 Louisiana under the French. Renault a mixed French and Natchez Indian meet Elise and revealed to the French that them Natchez are prepare am assault to the settle. The settles as usual made fun and does not believe him. The. Natchez attacked and murder them, Elise was saved and later due meet Renault who saves her but took to the tribe as a slave. There she suffer indignities and many of French women and children are become slaves. I do not wants gives spoilers and is better to buy the book, because the author deserve credit. The story is a homeneage to the American natives, who suffered abuses in his own lands. I recommended this and I like so much that I will buy the next one in the series. It worth the money.

FIERCE EDEN by Jennifer Blake is a sweeping, vibrant historical tale of love, honor, betrayal and adventure.

In 1729 Louisiana, long-simmering tension erupts into violence as the beleaguered Natchez Indians attack the French Fort Rosalie, destroying the fort and the surrounding farms and slaughtering the settlers.

Widowed French landowner Elise, after suffering marriage with an abusive husband, has no wish to submit to any man. But in the chaos after the massacre, she must accept the attentions of the half-French Natchez prince, Reynaud, as the price for his protection of her and her little band of survivors.

And so begins a far-ranging tale of culture clash and divided loyalties. Rich in in-depth historical detail and fast-paced action, Ms. Blake's superb novel sweeps you away into a vastly different time and place. Never dull, she draws you into the story of Elise's and Reynaud's increasing love for each other against the background of a world in violent transition.

Fierce Eden immerses you in cultures far different from our own, but where human nature remains the same. Elise, while a woman of her time, is no passive victim. She fights against her fate, and fails and succeeds in turn. Reynaud, as both French and Natchez, is torn between two worlds and must make the wrenching decision of where to place his loyalties.

This is one of the books that introduced me to traditional "Romance" novels. It was on the bookshelf of a friend of my parents' and I loved it! My opinion is sentimental, but I feel the book has aged very well.

I recall reading this book by the pool--fascinated, intrigued, and delighted by the narrative--until we went to the lake. And at the lake, there were even more romance novels! I was in heaven. This is an original beac read, as far as im concerned: I read it on the water.

Haven't finished this book yet, but so far, one of the characters( the older lady whose daughter is kidnapped and grandson is killed) becomes an irritating, whiny, character. This book could have done well without that particular character being mentioned repeatedly and the only thing the character talks about is her loss.

I first read this book about 20 years ago, and when I saw it on the freebook sifter, I decided to read it again. I'm glad I did. Jennifer Blake is a good writer whose historical romances are set in Louisiana and environs, which is where her family has lived for many generations. Her research is meticulous and personal. It is always a pleasure to read her books which have good storylines and fine historical details along with the romance. If you like historical romances, particularly those with some substance and good writing, you will be glad you chose to read this book.
This book exceeded my expectations! I don't usually read historical romances and honestly the cover and title seemed pretty cheesy, but the blurb intrigued me and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the historical aspects of it. I have read one other book of Jennifer Blake's and her writing seems to flow effortlessly moving the plot along with interesting characters. There was just the right amount of historical detail mixed in with the fictional romance to keep me reading page after page. I fell in love with Reynaud and at the same time was broken hearted over the story of his people. Well done!
