Start by marking When Summer's in the Meadow: Our Life in Clare as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. Just as good a read as the first book. Niall and Christine really convey what life in the west of Ireland is really like. Makes me want to visit and experience for myself the hospitality of Ireland's people. Niall Williams studied English and French Literature at University College Dublin and graduated with a MA in Modern American Literature. He moved to New York in 1980 where he married Christine Breen. His first job in New York was opening boxes of books in Fox and Sutherland's Bookshop in Mount Kisco.

Details the experiences of two novice farmers on a farm in western Ireland, relating their experiences at animal husbandry, their attempts to have a child, and their assimilation into Irish life.

This the second of four books by Niall Williams and Christine Breen, who left the US to move to Ireland in the mid-1990s. Not romanticised, but a lovely, truthful book about both good and bad aspects of moving to a place lacking most amenities people seem to expect these days. I highly recommend all four books.

This is the one of several books by Niall Williams and Christine Breen about their life on a small farm in western Ireland. My wife and I did not stop until we had read all four and only wish there were more. Niall and Chris present clearly the ups and downs of life in a village setting after having lived some time in the New York City suburbs. Accounts of their garden, livestock, neighbors, church, and family tempt us to want to visit the area--but probably not relocate!

Read this book 20 years ago and wanted to revisit it. Glad I did! Just moved to a rural piece of land in the Ozarks and can well relate to Niall and Chris! And of course, the book calls to my Irish roots in County Mayo!

This couple did not friends that cared for each other in the big city where both had good jobs, demonstrating loneliness may occur even when surrounded by large numbers of people. So they returned to their heritage in western Ireland, to a small village where people helped each other and enjoyed each other. Certainly there were struggles they endured, but friends who helped. And there they did find a caring community.

I loved this book. The author uses his voice to take you on a journey of a life time. I felt the heartbreak, the serenity, the hope, and finally the joy. This was the first book I read by this author/coauthors, and I plan to pick up another one.

It is a very well-written book, giving an inside view of life in the West of Ireland. Would highly recommend it.
