A COWBOY AND THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE Herman Vowell grew up on an Oregon homestead dreaming of being a cowboy  .

Herman Vowell grew up on an Oregon homestead dreaming of being a cowboy. He was barely 21 when he became buckaroo boss of the Pitchfork Ranch, one of the biggest spreads in the West. He felt his life was complete and then he met Betty Torrens, a city girl from California. They fell in love and married during the darkest days of World War II More.

I've been reading Rick Steber's books since "Rendezvous," and this is the best yet, possibly because I am familiar with some of the people in the story and the country where it takes place. It would be exciting and just if this book caused the case to be re-examined by a grand jury. Certainly there seems to be probable cause for certain people to be investigated more thoroughly.

Herman Vowell was a cowboy; Betty was a city girl. But their powerful love survived the dark days of World War 2, the encroachment of civilization into their isolated ranch, and the devastating ravages of breast cancer.
  • MEGA FREEDY
Buckaroo Heart by Rick Steber is the kind of story that both inspires you to be a better person and encourages to follow your dreams. The love story of Herman and Betty Vowell, set deep in the heart of Oregon's beautiful wilderness and extreme hardship and isolation, is one that will reaffirm your childhood dream of a love that can and will last forever. The true-life characters of Herman and Betty and Herman's brother Ray are brought to life and made flesh again by an author who relishes the beauty of words and has the knowledge and expertise to string together a story that will hold you spell-bound with anticipation of what's hiding on the horizon of his pen. A love story about real people - historically and graphically written - that you can only hope will be yours to experience one day.

I highly recommend this and other books by Rick Steber.

I knew the Vowells' when I was just a kid. My Dad and I worked cattle with them. Rick told this story with such respect and love, I would encourage anyone to read it. I Will be reading more of his books!
