The Touchstones series of poetry anthologies was first published in the UK between 1968 and 1972 in five volumes. In this article, the compilers of the anthologies, Michael and Peter Benton, look back over the 40 years of the series’ life. They reflect upon the principles which have guided their choices; and the social and political pressures, often exerted by governments, which they have confronted in their attempt to help school students become enthusiastic, committed and discriminating readers of poetry.

Peter Benton is a fictional character and surgeon for the first eight seasons of ER. Peter Benton in the first few seasons is portrayed as the goal-oriented arrogant surgeon. He, at times, portrays an abrasive personality; shown repeatedly throughout treatment of interns and co-workers. This poetry anthology is compiled specifically for 14- to 16-year-old students. It contains two different approaches to anthologizing poetry: one section contains an anthology of 10 featured poets which provides six key poems by each of six contemporary and four pre-20th-century poets; another section provides a thematic anthology with poems by a host of contemporary and pre-20th-century poets grouped by the theme of the poem. A teaching section aims to provide students of all abilities with guidance on ways into even the most complex of poems, and information on structure, form and style. A section is also provided to help students learn the art of comparing and contrasting poems. There are poems by writers such as Shakespeare, Donne, Wordsworth, Rosetti, Hardy, Larkin, Heaney and Lochhead.
