In his smart and self-assured debut, My Life in Heavy Metal, Steve Almond breathes fresh life into the oft-explored territory of young love and longing. The 12 stories in this pulsating collection are populated with hookups, drunken kisses, failed passes, and souring relationships.

In his smart and self-assured debut, My Life in Heavy Metal, Steve Almond breathes fresh life into the oft-explored territory of young love and longing. And though it's an aggressively sexual affair (when it comes to getting it on in the bedroom-or on the bathroom sink, for that matter-Almond doesn't believe in fading to black), at its core it's a collection with heart.

Steve Almond (born October 27, 1966) is an American short-story writer, essayist and author of ten books, three of which are self-published. Almond was raised in Palo Alto, California, graduated from Henry M. Gunn High School and received his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University. He spent seven years as a newspaper reporter, mostly in El Paso and at the Miami New Times. Almond lives in Arlington, Massachusetts with his wife and three children.

In Steve Almond's collection of short stories, he manages to capture within a few pages each the initial joy and sense of well-being at the spark of a relationship, the continuance of that feeling into the beginning stages of love and the sexual pleasure couples take in one other, to the decay and inevitable collapse of the affair. Perhaps the resemblance is because this book is also about love, sex, and the risible failures that accompany preoccupation with them. Then I found out it was fiction-short stories-and not another memoir.

How does Steve Almond get himself into so much trouble? Could it be his incessant moralizing? His generally poor posture? . In these twelve stories, Almond refuses to let his characters off the hook, or to abandon them, until we have seen the full measure of ourselves within their struggle. He had a story to tell but kept insisting he was no good at stories. His hands flapped about like loose cardboard. His hands flapped about like loose cardboard th agitation. This was, oh gosh, this was back in the sixties. Is it that long now? Yes. It must be. We’d just graduated from the University of Chicago and we were looking for work. I was looking for work I should say. This was before Connie and I, before we were married. I went to some conference or other and met this nice old fellow and, you know, everyone was looking for work.

This is a collection of exceptionally honest stories that never shy away from the truths of lust and love and the fine lines that separate them.
Almond's prose is sharp, elegant, and often incredibly funny, but never glib. "Geek Player Love Slayer" is a great example of this: the narrator's voice is witty, wired, and sexy, but it's still a story about love, no matter how you slice it, with an ending that will totally whack you upside the heart.
If you're squeamish about sex, you might have trouble with some of the stories in this collection -- Almond doesn't beat around the bush...when it comes to his descriptions of the sensual. But it's not gratuitous; these are stories that truly drill down into what drives desire, what we're all searching for, and the sometimes misguided ways we go about getting it.
I highly recommend this book, especially to people who are tired of "careful' short stories that sacrifice passion to subtlety for its own sake.

I am not really sure what my expectations were but for some reason this collection of stories did not live up to its promise. They're okay stories, not particular innovative or inspiring, good for a quick read in the airport, waiting for your flight, or perhaps in a long queue at the check-out. The collection promises stories of love and longing, and most of the stories do have that theme, yet I couldn't help think of the many, many collections of stories which have done a much better job at this theme. What I do agree with though - in fact another reviewer (who gave the collection three stars also pointed this out) is that the author has a wonderful way with dialogue and words. He is definitely a smart writer. Is that enough? No, not really.

Steve Almond is one of my favorite writers, and his short stories are mini-masterpieces. Steve captures the agonies and ecstasies of the human condition with precise language and wit. I look forward to more of his stories.

..., Almond's collection made resonate memories of ... and longing past, and the parts of oneself made raw by rejection and self-doubt and vulnerability, of pride and ego and conquest (on the latter point, Steve's characters seduce and lose a sexual cornucopia of Mexicans, Russians, Poles, Chinese...and a Republican. Narcissistic gloating? You make the call.). An audacious collection, but probably one to be avoided during a dry spell ;-).

a post-modern heir to philip roth, almond is hysterically lyrical and poignant in the sack; his sad sack academically inclined male protagonists just can't seem to tame their libido. hence, love/sex/coupling inevitably curdles. not all stories here are top-drawer (heavy metal, republicam, pale lover, ex.. are the cream of the crop.) almond is weakest, surprisingly so, at the end of his stories, as if to say, he is worn-out, post-coitally exhausted. the endings don't satisfy. nor are they checkovian. they hang, so to speak, limp.

YES, yes, and yes! Get a copy and have a great time! It's exceptional, as all of his work is! Truly entertaining and always well-written.

The fact that I got it for only four dollars was unbelievable! I've been looking for the cheapest prices on different sites, but Amazon never lets me down when it comes to deals such as this. The shipping was very reliable as well as the condition of its package. This book however is very explicit; would not recommend this to a minor due to its adult rated detailed content.
"My Life in Heavy Metal" is most compelling story collection I've read in a long time and the best are the longer ones where Almond's brilliance truly shines through. While I was caught up in each story for what was happening to the characters, the beautiful, sad details of their situations did not escape me. I wanted to reach out and touch these people, and as a woman, I wanted to shake some sense into David, a charactor whose evolving love life was the center of three separate stories. I knew David would end up how he did and I desperately wanted to prevent him from further pain and lonliness. He is only one of many characters that will stay in my memory for years to come. I highly recommend this book to any Generation Xer and anyone else who appreciates rare beauty in writing.
