A controlled paroxysm of despair, doubt, shaken faith and unexpected grace, Plante's taut, incantatory novel probes a consciousness on the edge of cracking up. The nameless narrator, a Catholic college student from New England (who, like the characters in Plante's Francoeur trilogy, is of French-Canadian ancestry) spends his junior year abroad in the Belgian town of Louvain.

The Accident : A Novel. David Plante is the author of more than a dozen novels, including the Francoeur trilogy-The Family, The Woods, and The Country-as well as a work of nonfiction, Difficult Women: A Memoir of Three. He teaches writing at Columbia University and lives in New York and London.

David Robert Plante (born March 4, 1940 in Providence, Rhode Island) is an American novelist, diarist, and memoirist. The son of Albina Bisson and Aniclet Plante, he is of both French-Canadian and North American Indian descent. He is a graduate of Boston College and the Université catholique de Louvain. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

David Plante Without a doubt – the worst book I've ever read. A horrid mishmash of philology, philosophy, and obsession with the dead.

In the weeks following the accident he becomes obsessed with the origins of Indo-European alphabets, his fascination growing as boundless as his grief-and soon taking its place. Now, in pursuit of the story of the alphabet, he leaves his home, Peggy, his teaching job, and bands together with other grief-stricken abecedarians who believe that the alphabet as we know it had in its origins a meaning they are intent on uncovering. Without a doubt – the worst book I've ever read.

The son of Albina Bisson and Aniclet Plante, he is of both French-Canadian and North American Indian descent. His novels examine the spiritual in a variety of contexts, but notably in the milieu of large, working-class, Catholic families of French Canadian background. His male characters range from openly gay to sexually ambiguous and questioning.

The accident is a book for those who enjoy literature that makes you think. It reminded me of a Hemingway novel, and I highly recommend it.

David Plante's dazzling portraits of three influential women in the literary world, now back in print for the first time in decades. Difficult Women, the book with which David Plante made his name, presents three portraits-each one of them as detailed, textured, and imposing as the those of Lucian Freud-of three extraordinary, complicated, and, yes, difficult women, while also raising intriguing and in their own way difficult questions about the character and motivations of the keenly and often cruelly observant portraitist himself.

I am glad the other reviewers enjoyed the book but I did not.

One reviewer compared it to Hemingway. Sure, in the sense that much of the meaning remains below the surface of the prose. Yet I do not recall ever reading Hemingway and saying "So what?" F. Scott Fitzgerald could depict superficial, vapid characters who nevertheless convey a sense of tragedy. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for these characters.

Your mileage may vary but I am glad I borrowed the book from the library.

A small masterpiece. Plante's prose is haunting as is the story. One of our most gifted novelists.
