Mix Spanish curses, a unique family history of love, betrayal, agony and hope and this is all here. The book sets the atmosphere and the allegory well and rural Catalan life over the last century and then adds these women who are struck by a family " curse". I was drawn to THE HOUSE OF IMPOSSIBLE LOVES by the compelling title and synopsis and, while the prose was gorgeous and the plot unique, I just wasn't hooked by this novel. The story tells about multiple generations of women from a family that has been cursed. Cristina Lopez Barrio is a storyteller, and her words invite the reader to forge an intimate connection with her characters.

Ezequiel smiled at him. He was wearing a black suit as stiff as armor and a white, collarless shirt. His short hair was thick and brown, curls brushing his temples. At sixteen, Santiago was taller than him, a handsome young man as tall as a church steeple, just like his father. I’m so happy you two have finally met, Olvido said.

It's a rare novel, very well written, complicated and exoteric novel. The Laguna women in the novel suffer from their difficult past, all of them are cursed and cannot keep the men in their lives, they are killed or they die. This novel reminds me "Like Water for Chocolate", for the mystical and magical plot. I liked it but I can't say that I loved. However, the novel is very well written.

It's a delightful book. Some times the writer seems to loose the thread of the idea, but re-emerges with some new ideas the save the book
from the ordinary.
